Mirena coil removal - what happened in next few weeks?

Hi all

I'm thinking of having my Mirena coil removed because I don't get on with it and I think it may be causing UTIs.

I'm going on holiday soon so I'm wondering whether to delay in case there are any unpleasant effects in the next few weeks after removal. I'm lucky to be able to choose the date as I know some people have struggled to get them removed.

With this in mind, would you be able to share your experiences (good and bad) so I can decide? In the interests of scientific enquiry (sort of...) if nothing notable happened please do post to say that!

Thanks so much in advance!

I bled for a couple of days after it was removed, then was blissfully free of the evil thing (I bled continuously with it) and could sleep properly again, and didn't feel so low.

I was completely fine, no side effects just maybe slight bleeding. I was so glad to have mine removed

How would it be causing UTIs? It’s nowhere near your bladder

NamingConundrum · 16/07/2024 22:03

Nothing! If it's not stuck on anything, they pull and its out. Odd feeling but no pain. I had nothing until my period restarted.

Katrinawaves · 16/07/2024 22:03

Nothing noticeable for me - mine were removed when TTC as I had no unpleasant side effects from them.

Spudulike3 · 16/07/2024 22:10

Hi all, thanks for your feedback. I had heard that it could cause heavy bleeding or for your next period to be very heavy. I'm guessing you guys didn't have this as you haven't mentioned it?

I don't remember any problems at all with the removal but as for the first period after I couldn't tell you as I was pregnant straight away! So maybe leave it until after your holiday for safety Grin

I had mine removed recently but then also another put straight back in. I did bleed when it came out but then my period was due and I get spotting in the lead up. Nothing too bad though and my period with new coil in just lasted a few days longer but wasn’t heavier.

BusyEvenForBee · 16/07/2024 22:18

Two days after the removal the heavy bleeding started, wish I was warned. I never had bleeding like that. Lasted about a week. Did some research and yes, it happens a lot. If mirena is not causing you a lot of discomfort now, maybe it is worth postponing till after the holiday.

Please google Mirena crash before making your decision, not all women feel side effects from the withdrawal of the coil but unfortunately I was one of the unlucky few.

I had severe mood swings including depression, anxiety and paranoia for around 6 weeks post removal. I wish I had been warned of the possibility of this happening as I could have been so much better prepared. I came very close to a nervous breakdown and thought I was losing my mind. It was only with hindsight that I was able to link my sudden change of mood with the Mirena removal and of course it was too late by then to take steps to mitigate it.

@BusyEvenForBee it's so funny how people vary in their reactions. I do agree there is a lot of stuff brushed under the carpet with hormonal IUDs

@1wilma1 I'm sorry to hear that - sounds really nasty. Hope you are better now. I do feel the medical profession can be too cavalier in messing with women's hormones.
