Guess my conditions... cause the GP has no clue.

I've just gone into a GP appt fully prepared with my 6 months worth of symptoms.

Her take.. come off HRT and I'll put you on non hormonal antidepressants instead, cut out fibre from your diet and follow a FOMAP plan?

She has ordered in some bloods but any guesses? She's told me I'm not diabetic as my bloods said I wasn't.

Below for the long list...

Thought some were peri menopause related?

Thirst (increases)
Waking at night
Hungry
Sweating smelling like vinegar
Weight gain over 12kg in 8 months
Gastric pain and bloating weekly
Top area of stomach goes really hard
Tired sleeping for 14+ hours
Tired in the afternoons
Blurry eyes for a whole day (eye test) glasses
Gum work having to be done at dentist
Intolerance to any alcoholic drinks
Headaches low level fuzzy
Dizziness occasionally
Hair thinning
Nails brittle

I’m on HRT patch and non cyclic progesterone that stopped a zillion other symptoms, hot flushes, night sweats, awful biweekly heavy bleeding. So HRT has been good to me.

These are all low level until recently they seem to come and go and flare up., but are becoming more obvious

Main issue that’s bothering me is weight gain, I’m tracking 1200 calories a day and I’m still gaining weight, 5k+ steps exercise 3-4 times a week, I literally couldn’t be any better!

I had most of that and it was all down to an underactive thyroid which I believe started with perimenopause. NHS were no help at all, I was falling apart and on my knees and they told me there was nothing wrong with me. There so clearly was! Went and saw a private doctor, got the under active thyroid diagnosis and started medication. Took a while but I'm fine now. Digestion working as it should, and everything else too. Looking back it was like my body had the handbrake on and was doing its best but just couldn't work properly.

Have you had ferritin B12 vitamin D tested as well?
No idea if it's still going or not but there used to be a very good website/forum called thyroid patient advocacy

That's the feeling like a handbrake.

And yep it's all come back as low folate and low vitamin D, which I'm happy to give a go, and grateful that it should be a noticeable difference as both are low.

But interesting how much low levels mimic peri symptoms.

Great news that you have some answers
I note that your hba1c is 42 which is high normal
If you want more investigative blood tests, I can recommend Thriva
You can request all sorts and I know they do more accurate levels than nhs
My hba1c was flagged up by them but normal with nhs
Just for info ofc

Just checking it and it appears I have very low vitamin D, it's below 40 and the normal range is 50-374.

I'm on the NHS app seeing results, and whoever has reviewed this has put "no action needed"

My serum ferritin's is actually higher than normal range. 165? But is marked as normal no concerns? Normal range is 13-150

Seems everything else is bang in the middle of normal range which is fab news my ca 125 all good.

So tips on upping vitamin D? I've seen the sprays and something about taking magnesium to help absorption?

Or shall I just up my foods with vitamin D, or alternatively move to the south of France?

I had the same results as you - my vitamin D level was 19!

I had 40,000 iu of vitamin d prescribed, once a week for 7 weeks, then 3,000 iu a day forever. I'm taking the Better You (or Better Health?) oral spray.

Iron was also the same - free iron in my blood was really high, but the other type (I forget) was low, so on iron supplements (should be daily but taking every other day as I have IBD which it triggers if I take daily).

I feel a bit better. No weight loss yet and the bloating is marginally improved. I have repeat blood tests next week to see if the results have improved any..

Good luck to you, I hope they prescribe you something to help you feel better.

woah!! 19!!!!!!!!!!! You just have felt dreadful! I spent many years living in African countries and getting a lot of sun but within 2 years being in the U.K. my vit d had dropped to the 40s

startstopengine · 23/07/2024 14:47

@ShouldITell101 that's so low!!

Weirdly after posting and seeing the results I bought a new tub of marmite about 4 days ago and for the first time in years ate it on some rivita, I've also been eating more cereals

Maybe I should just listen to my body as I wanted around the shops.

Are you my gp? 🤣

I have some if the same symptoms and my gp is gagging to get my so doped up on anti depressants that I don't care about anything anymore. I declined

No I'm not. 😂

Just a wild stab in the dark, having had to face the same attitude from several of my own GPs over the years. I just casually mention that my DM died of cancer because her GP fobbed her and her symptoms off, and all of a sudden they change their tune.

I'm sorry to hear that. Heartbreaking. My cousin in her twenties was buried last week as she was to young to have breast cancer at her young age. I might need to copy you.

My gp said " I might be wrong, but I rarely am" then I pointed out that he thought my sleep apnea was insomnia and he is just a human prone to mistakes. He thinks he is some kind of god, above mere plebs like me. How would I know if I fell asleep in soft play ball pit? I only have a ploutry BSc so mistook falling asleep for a bit of daydreaming. He has possibly never set foot in a soft play and knows its one place you can not just nod off. Toddlers lobbing balls,at your head while screaming and doing wrestling moves on you 🤣

Oh don't talk to me about doctors!

For years I thought I had diabetes. I kept telling the doctor that I had a raging thirst, me pee smelt sweet and I had to get up quite a few times in the night to pee. I kept getting thrush. They kept saying it was ok. When I went to see a friend in Denmark I was telling her about it. She mentioned she had a diabetic dog and had those stick tester thingys and told me to give it a go. Well it went straight to the purple colour (that's bad). Now I am on medication.

Another time I thought I had a lung infection. I could hardly breathe or walk. I was at the doctors about something else and told them of my symptoms. They weren't interested nd I could not get an appointment so I went to a walk in where they were very thorough and in the end it was heart failure and fluid was in my lungs. Suddenly even the GP took it seriously!

startstopengine · 24/07/2024 08:22

@Deathraystare wow are you ok now?

OP posts:
Deathraystare · 24/07/2024 09:49

@startstopengine
Yes thank you but if ever I don't take my pills I get a rattle-y chest! And when I go back on the pills (because of a water tablet and two other pills that make me wee) I pee for England!!!

ShouldITell101 · 24/07/2024 12:46

@startstopengine @TheShiningCarpet Yeah I felt awful - couldn't even drive and just kept feeling exhausted. I put it down to my IBD, which gets the blame for everything else - until it got so bad I couldn't answer a question without an obvious delay.

I hope you get on the right treatment path soon OP!

If your iron is high it’s worth looking into haemachromatosis (a condition where your body stores too much iron). It can cause type 2 diabetes if left untreated. It’s easily treated.

startstopengine · 25/07/2024 18:21

@FoodSchmood thanks, it's really high. But the GO hasn't mentioned it all? I just saw on the NHS app results.

OP posts:
TheShiningCarpet · 25/07/2024 19:21

Do you mean your serum ferritin? It’s not very high at all - it would have to be over 300 and tsat over 40 % to raise concerns for that. But Note that multiple conditions can cause high ferritin so the gp would have to refer for further testing To confirm
