Temperatures in London - Clothing - Wimbledon

I'm an Australian, who will be travelling to the UK next week.

This is the first time I've visited the UK in summer, and I'm still quite confused about what clothing to bring.

Watching Wimbledon, I see a lot of women (including POW and Charlotte) in short sleeve dresses and bare legs. The temperatures have barely topped 20 degrees, but surely in the shade it's cooler.

Is 20 degrees considered very warm in London? A day with 20 degree maximum is considered fairly cool in Australia. In a lot of the country, that's a maximum temp for a sunny day in midwinter.

I'm attending a wedding in the north of England and my dress is long sleeved. Will I be the only one in a sleeved dress? I see lots of suggestions for wedding guest dresses that are sleeveless or short sleeved and I always think I'd be cold in those, particularly in a stone church, and after dark.

In 20 degrees, Londoners take their lunch breaks in the nearest park or square, hike their skirts up, and lie on the grass to sunbathe.

London weather is more Tassie than Brissy.

I'm British. In the U.K. I'm confused about what to wear too. We all are.

I wore shorts and a cotton shirt today. A couple of days ago I was wearing a woolly jumper and a waterproof coat.

That's the U.K. for you - bring a bit of everything.

It’s confusing at the moment - I was wearing a summer dress today with a cardigan, sitting outside for lunch, and must have taken off and put the cardigan back on about six times!
Long sleeves will be fine especially in church, and if it is quite summery in style.

I come from a country where Anything below 25 is definitely not hot , requires a cardigan at minimum . Below 20 is coldish below 15 is cold and then you reach freezing , people wear winter coat at 12-14 degrees even 18-20 🤣🤣

in the U.K. for you it will be cold. 95% of my wardrobe is long sleeves. And even the t-shirts I own I could never wear them when it’s hot for real ( above 26) , this year it’s been atrocious weather like so just plan for cold windy and wet , bring a few light stuff in case there is some sort of miracle .

I'll be bringing warm weather clothes as we're also going to Italy.

It just confuses me that I see so many people in the UK in sleeveless dresses, tops etc and think surely they must be cold 99% of the time.

Looks like Wimbledon will be low 20s next week, so just wear what you'd feel comfortable in in those temperatures.

Oops, I misread and thought you were going to wimbledon.

HamiltonHarty · 17/07/2024 01:33

It sounds like you'll need a jacket or cardigan or will be cold. Don't worry, no one will notice. People just wear what they feel comfortable wearing and no one finds it odd.

No, it isn't. It reached 40C in London two years ago. We considered that very warm. It can get very humid.
There are tons of nationalities in London. Some will consider 20 freezing and wear a winter coat. Some will be rushing around wearing short sleeves. It varies.
