Should I go to Iceland on my own?

Absolutely love solo travelling and I really want to do as many destinations as I can over the next decade (my 40s).

I'm thinking of going in February. Is it safe for a woman alone, I'm presuming yes? Is three nights enough? Any recommendations? I know it's expensive there.

PS - I love cold weather 🥶

One of my favourite ever holiday destinations. It’s extremely safe, the locals are very friendly & everyone speaks English. I would really recommend visiting the harbour in Reykjavik as it has great cafes & restaurants & lovely views. My friend & I did a visit to the Blue Lagoon (tour bus) & hired a car to visit some hot springs. Reykjavik was great for pottering around, really nice vintage shops & cafes. They know their coffee & cake! The supermarkets were good too, I seem to remember they sold enormous iced ring donuts! In general it wasn’t as expensive as we feared but this was around 10 years ago. You will love it OP!

I'm not sure I'd recommend whale watching, we did that in September, the weather was quite good, but it was freezing even though we were well wrapped up. I can't imagine how cold it would be in winter.

We went whale watching in November. Saw loads of whales. It wasn't that cold - about as cold as a cold winter day in Yorkshire - and he was brilliant, the boats have big heavy duty waterproof overalls you can wear.

I'd just skip November to March. It's also very gloomy that time of year, very short days (obviously worse the closer you are to the winter solstice), which means you have much less time to actually enjoy the landscape.

Of course you can get some beautiful days in winter and the snow can be nice when it's not blowing hard directly into your face, but many parts of the country are inaccessible and you're much more likely to encounter weather warnings that disrupt your plans.

I'd recommend coming in summer or autumn, renting a car, taking at least a week, preferably two, and doing the whole ring road or parts of it with a trip into the highlands or West Fjords. If you want to see Northern Lights just avoid May to mid August. September is a good bet.

Not because of the cold. It's not that cold. It's just a stormy time of year with a lot of snow/rain and strong winds which may seriously limit how much you can see.

There is soo much to see in Iceland and I honestly wouldn't bother coming just to hang around in Rvk.

Oh yes. We saw pretty wild weather which I think was part of what I loved! We were lucky with the roads but did have to be flexible.

We have only spent the odd day in Reykjavik - I agree with this that there is so much more to see.

It's an incredibly safe country and everyone speaks English. I wouldn't hesitate to visit alone, but three days isn't enough in my opinion and Feb isn't ideal in terms of weather and daylight hours. I would consider late April or September a much better time to visit, avoiding the peak season and more daylight. We went for seven days and only managed to see around a third of the 'main' sights. We didn't even get near the north or east coast of the country. Honestly, I think two weeks is needed. Perhaps five days would give you a better flavour of the country and let you know if you'd like to go back.

Thanks everyone. I think I'm going to go towards the end of March and I'm stretching to five days. Appreciate the advice from you all

I went to Iceland years ago but it absolutely would be somewhere I’d go back to on my own

probably consider the day trips plentiful from Reykjavik to see the waterfalls etc- more sociable and you wouldn’t have to worry about driving by yourself. Which would prob be fine but a bit lonely- we had a puncture miles from anywhere.

Oh I think it will just take you to FB log in!

It's a group called "Reykjavik, Iceland travel and vacation" and there was a post 3 days ago by someone called Adrienne Corso who posted about their solo trip round Iceland.
