Are primary school reports pointless (sort of)

On my children's reports there's a bit that says A=greater depth B=working at expected standard for age. C = working towards expected standard for age .

C could mean they are slightly behinde but not to bad or it could mean they are 3 years behinde.

I mean it's nice to sit with the kids and say how well they are doing and how pleased we are etc.

But their struggles are not made clear. I know one ds is Working way below exspections as he has learning difficulties/disability .

My other ds has a some C . But i don't know if he's slightly behind or by quite alot.

I know I can ask but it's good to have it in a report

You would know if your child was way way behind because the school should be trying to find out why that is and part of that is involving parents.

That is how we assess in primary school. Working towards, working at or working at greater depth within,
We also report working at pre key stage if necessary.
The teacher will be able to tell you what needs to be done to reach the standard. Keep in mind though that next year there is a whole new set of objectives.

Reports are there to give you information of how your child is doing according to school assessment and to keep a record of it. They are not for detailed explanations of struggles, those are things that should be discussed in person and much earlier in the year than now.
