Plus size waterproof jacket that doesn't make you sweat?

JiraffDeSaki · 13/07/2024 13:17

I hate dog walking when it's rainy but muggy - I do 2 - 4 miles a day but I'm pretty fat, so in summer my core temp gets very high and then the sweat pours off me. 😳

All fine and good in a breathable top, but wearing a jacket in summer is hell - I wore one this morning and there wasn't much rain, but on the inside I was drenched - sweat soaked the wrists of the jacket and my t-shirt was wet like it had come out of the washing machine! Eww!

Another jacket consigned to charity for someone less sweaty. Has anybody found a decent breathable walking jacket that isn't too clammy and hot, but keeps the rain off? I have a couple of Regatta jackets that are good but they are too heavy for summer - I'd like something thin like a type of cagoul, but don't they make you sweat too?

I've tried the cheap ones from Mountain Warehouse but they were awful. I'm also a bit limited by being a size 20-22. I don't mind a men's jacket?

How about a poncho?

Kelvinator1 · 13/07/2024 14:06

Following as I have the same issues. I have a good quality Kathmandu coat waterproof coat, but I end up drenched with sweat inside, peeling the wet sleeves off my bare arms. It's awful.

Ooh a poncho, that's actually not a bad shout - plenty of air circulation! I will go Google...

I sweat like a beast in a poncho, even with the gaps under the arms. Following with interest as all the ones I’ve tried aren’t waterproof enough for a long time in the rain.

Eurgh peeling the wet sleeves off is hideous AND IT'S YOUR OWN SWEAT 🤢🤢

My DH has about a billion expensive outdoor jackets of varying thickness, but even he says even the most technical of waterproof and breathable fabrics by Rab or Montane are no match for me. 😂

Did you see the poncho suggestion? I'm off for a look about...

What about a softshell type jacket instead. Won't help in heavy rain but in the muggy drizzle it will be ok

I bought one from Joules a couple of years ago. It's ideal for keeping the rain off whilst allowing air to circulate.

I have a Regatta one that’s lightweight and has a mesh lining. I think it’s the lining that stops it becoming clammy.

SuncreamAndIceCream · 13/07/2024 15:49

There's literally nothing on the market which will protect you from rain & not be sweaty in the summer

I'd just take an umbrella

henlake7 · 13/07/2024 15:53

I have a regatta pack a mac style that works well, Ive even gone running in it without getting too sweaty. Although it is only hip length so everything below that gets soaked!

Also if its hot and the humidity is high then nothing will stop you getting sweaty.

Oh dammit do you? I thought all the airy space might be the answer...

Any fabric that is waterproof will make you hot/sweat I’m afraid. It’s impossible for a fabric to be both breathable and waterproof, either one negates the other.

No, I get that one will sweat in summer regardless - just looking for something that won't render me soaking wet in under an hour. I guess some fabrics are better than others. I used to muck out 12 stables and turn horses out all wearing the same big men's Regatta waterproof, and I rarely sweated in that - but DH reminded me that that was 5 stone and 25 years ago.

A brolly is fine but I already have my hands full with the 2 canines, one of which is a naughty little bastard who needs two leads. 🙄

There are plenty of technical fabric manufacturers of isotex and gore tex who would beg to differ, although in my years of experience of working and walking in such things, their efficacy is not quite as good as they make out...

All I'm hoping for with this post is for ideas from anyone who found a fair to middling solution.

I like the poncho idea.

Here's one to try and on sale so not too painful if it doesn't work out

EnglishBluebell · 13/07/2024 16:15

Joules! A lot of them are cotton (yet waterproof) so don't make you sweat as easily, being natural fabrics.
I am the same as you OP, I have a heat intolerance and I'm always hot so I simply cannot wear polyester, even in winter!

LiterallyOnFire · 13/07/2024 16:15

M&S "good move" range is where I buy a lot of my dog walking clobber. Especially ventilated waterproof jackets. It's good value and the range of sizes always seems good.

Whackawhacka · 13/07/2024 16:15

Have you tried a seasalt one? I have a mid weight tin cloth coat from there that I’m still wearing this time of year. They have thinner lightweight ones as well. The sleeves are lined with polyester though.

Ooh and Joules too if you please!

I just found one on Amazon that has THUMB LOOPS

Arcteryx? Some hiking raincoats have zips under the arms so you don't overheat.

TimbuktuTimbuktu · 13/07/2024 16:20

Look at jackets designed for running in the rain. TKMaxx often have some good ones at a decent price.

LizzieBennett73 · 13/07/2024 16:25

I've got a Didriksons for dog walking, it's brilliant and as a bigger girl, I don't feel like it's a "sauna" coat. It's also A line cut and smart enough to wear to work when it's pissing it down (and I've got all the mud off it Hmm)
