Why do so many adults fall over during the parents race

Theseers · 13/07/2024 09:01

Genuine question

There were around 5 dads races (6 dads in each). In 4 races a dad fell over

There were at least 8 mums races. I lost count of the number who fell over.

It’s less than 100m of dry flat grass. Why as an adult can’t you run 100m without falling over? Baffling

Lack of practice

Useruserdoubleuser · 13/07/2024 09:04

They’re not used to it. Like toddlers!

FriendlyNeighbourhoodAccountant · 13/07/2024 09:04

Probably pushing it to go faster than they've needed to for decades coupled with some potentially inappropriate shoes.

Bax765 · 13/07/2024 09:05

Grass is quite slippery and they're probably not wearing sports shoes.

Moveoverdarlin · 13/07/2024 09:06

Pissed.

Underlig · 13/07/2024 09:06

What is a parents race?

Carrotsandsticks · 13/07/2024 09:08

They banned adult races a my kids junior school, too many injuries from untrained adults. I need to be fit for a living, I never participated in those races....

At sports day

not sure it’s the shoes, there were a lot of trainers and bare feet.

I’ve never seen a parent fall over at sports day must be on the wine before the race who knows. I’m not a runner so I haven’t ever joined in cos I would fall over with my dodgy knees. Sure it’s just some fun though haha bobs mum fell over

Crunchymum · 13/07/2024 09:09

They stopped the parent races after a dad broke his wrist in 4 places and needed emergency surgery (he didn't stop and ran into a wall). His wife had a 10 day old baby as well as a reception age child. He was out of action for months!!

Abawaba123 · 13/07/2024 09:09

Never seen a parent fall, I think the ones at your school must be tipsy tbh.

I was wondering this, some mums inexplicably decided to just do a race (the school don’t do parent races) at the end, 2 fell flat on their faces. I’m guessing maybe lack of practice?

Shitandrun · 13/07/2024 09:12

I really thought I was going to fall during the mums race!

I haven't run for years, I was wearing crocs 🤦‍♀️, hundreds of people were watching, and the competitiveness kicks in! I think that's why so many of the dads fall, they get super competitive and want to win. To be fair, most of the dads that fell did an elegant roll then popped back up. If I fell, I'd need to be stretchered off the field while I died inside from embarrassment.

ImTheOnlyUpsyOne · 13/07/2024 09:12

I fell over because we had to stop half way and pick up a beanbag. I didn't stop my legs while bending forward ...it was mortifying.

And I run...do aerobics, step, walking and spin. My MIL also enjoyed sitting beside me telling me if she'd done the race she would never have fallen.

ImTheOnlyUpsyOne · 13/07/2024 09:12

...and barefoot because I'd attended in flip flops

HumanLeague · 13/07/2024 09:13

Not used to running, not preparing for it and warming up, inappropriate footwear and performance anxiety i'd guess.

No-one ever wants to be last. Especially not when their kids are watching.

Screamingabdabz · 13/07/2024 09:15

It’s karma for being competitive show offs.

AnImaginaryCat · 13/07/2024 09:15

Didn't see many parents fall during the parents' races. On the occasions I did it was the dads' race and always seemed to be caused by pushing and shoving. I'd just put it down to a small number of silly men being pathetically overcomptative.

There was on occasion some ridiculous behaviour after the mums' race - but they did seem to draw the line at pushing and shoving.

Giant toddlers 😂

Is it not a dive because falling is not losing. It provides a convenient excuse, rather than point out an obvious lack of fitness.

Spinet · 13/07/2024 09:17

If you fall near the start you don't have to run 100m do you. That's probably why.

Longma · 13/07/2024 09:23

No drink related issues at ours however we do have adults fall. It's normally in the dads race - too over-competitive, pushing one another (albeit in a jovial jokey type of way) and running in unsuitable footwear in often damp and uneven grass. In the few times the women fall it's usually down to running on damp grass in unsuitable shoes whereas with the men it's usually down to too many of them trying to beat ine another,

This year a grandad fell and hit his head. Was later taken to hospital incase of concussion.

A few years back a dad fell and broke his collarbone.

We have a lot of medics as parents so at least there is always medical support in hand. Infact the worst injuries have been in the medics themselves.

Possumly · 13/07/2024 09:23

I remember a mum falling and hurting themselves. This would have been around 25 years ago! I used to be a good and fast runner. Now thinking about my son's future sports days.. I think I'm likely to injure myself. I ashamedly don't exercise at all and something hurts if I try to run now.

OldTinHat · 13/07/2024 09:26

Because they're super competitive and forget that they're not super fit and young anymore, so over exert and face plant the ground.
