What's the going rate for a 13yo to a 13yo friend for their birthday?

DS tells me that it's £25, which seems like quite a lot. At the same time, I don't want him to feel out of step with his friends.

We gave £15 last year, and thought £20 this year.

My DD is 13 and she spends £15 to £20 (of our money) on her closest friends. If she was giving cash or a voucher we'd go up to £20 for a best friend.

My 6 year old just received a bunch of £20 presents/cash from her friends at her party so I’d say £25 is fine.

I think £20 max is plenty

Favouritefruits · 13/07/2024 10:37

😮 £10 here, inflation has gone nad 😂

Talipesmum · 13/07/2024 10:41

I was going to say around £15 and if it’s cash and not a present, ours often seem to have £10 and a bag of sweets which they’re always pretty happy with. £25 seems far too much.

Smartiepants79 · 13/07/2024 10:41

We only spend around £10-15. Have never given cash.

Smartiepants79 · 13/07/2024 10:42

Yep £10 and some chocolate would be more than welcome here. £25 is nephew territory.

AbstemiousBreakfast · 13/07/2024 11:05

Yes, I also think £20 is plenty, and that £25 is nephew territory 🧐.

There seemed to be a switch from cheaper gifts at primary school to cash only at secondary school.

I'm amazed at £20 for primary school kids - we had a few whole class parties, and DS would have got far too much if that happened 😮. I remember a lot of games and toys, and maybe a few fivers.

Thanks everyone.

£25 for best mates £10 in a card for randoms

Gladtobeout · 13/07/2024 11:22

£10 for most. £20 for a best mate.

If they were buying a physical gift, probably between £10 - £15.

Love51 · 13/07/2024 11:24

Mine has just spent £15 of her own money on a piece of merchandise of a shared interest. I don't think it is necessarily about the exact money, just giving something that you know will be appreciated. You can get a lot for a fiver for a 6 year old, at 13 you need to be discerning! I wouldn't be giving £25 though, my kids spend their own money!
