Are these normal viral symptoms

I've name changed cos I've whinged about this in real life...

I've been ill for about 3 weeks. Started with headaches which I put down to the weather. Then the headaches peaked in a one night mega headache, after that I got achy bones for days, and terrible fatigue. The fatigue went on for a week, where I'd come home from school run and just fall asleep on sofa, could barely function to make dc tea. Then I had a weekend of vomiting and total appetite loss.

The fatigue has then continued for another week. I couldn't work, doing basic tasks absolutely wiped me, I've just been lying down and my body continues to ache all over. My appetite still isn't great.

Throughout this I've had a cough. It's not constant but very annoying when it attacks.

Anyway after the vomiting weekend I decided to see a doctor. They said it's a viral throat infection, this surprised me a bit as I don't have a sore throat. The doctor did say it could go on for another 7-10 days.

Anyway, that was 5 days ago and I'm still achey and have fatigue. I'm absolutely shitting myself that it's something more sinister, cancer to be specific. I'm getting really anxious about it, I'm a single parent and worry about my dc being left without their mum.

Is it normal for your body to ache and to be completely wiped out, when you have a throat infection? Would you be worried if you were me?

Have you done a covid test?

RosieChardonnay · 12/07/2024 23:29

It does sound like a virus

spiderlight · 12/07/2024 23:31

This sounds exactly like my friend and her husband's recent experience with COVID. They were both really poorly and completely wiped out for about three weeks.

Agree with pp. Sounds like the new covid variant.

Rest as much as you can and only do what you need to do, ie cooking and laundry. Dusting and hoovering etc can wait another couple of weeks. Drink plenty of fluids and take paracetamol/ibuprofen for the aches.

Thanks for replying. I did 4 covid tests all negative, but I hope that is what I have.

I was recently hospitalised when a virus turned from a similar fatigue and lost of symptoms, to waking one morning with a stiff neck, aversion to light and the feeling my head might actually explode.

Turned out my body had depleted its electrolyte stores because I'd tried to function through the virus, and so I was severely dehydrated despite drinking lots.

Apparently you go past being thirsty!

The consultant explained the membrane around my brain had contracted due to dehydration and that was the cause of my scary symptoms.

Administered fluids and I felt better within the hour!

Might be worth taking some electrolytes!

Wow. How weird is that. Did they suggest always taking electrolytes with a virus to prevent this in future @botleybump or that you were just unlucky this time?

Geronimum · 13/07/2024 14:44

God @botleybump how awful! That's good to know about topping up electrolytes.

After my late night wobble I'm actually starting to feel a bit more human, can actually stand and shower without having to nap afterwards.

Sympathies to anyone feeling rubbish right now, especially those who have to care for another human at the same time xx

Your symptoms sound exactly like what I've had - nausea/vomiting, aching all over, headche, cold, sore throat & cough.

I thought I'd do a COVID test and it was positive. I'm 2 weeks in and only just starting to feel a bit better. I wouldn't rule COVID out.
