I've struggled for a long time to get back into reading but was given this book and couldn't put it down.

If I enjoyed that what other books would you recommend?

There was a thread a while ago about books that people think are awful and all these were on there so maybe check that out as if you like these you'll probably like all the others on there too 😬😅 Matt haig featured heavily

Matt Haig books are awful, and nothing like the Crawdads.

@MyMomLovedViolets The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah.

I think you’d like Kate Morton, Homecoming https://www.waterstones.com/book/homecoming/kate-morton/9781529094084

And The Poison Wood Bible https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7244.The_Poisonwood_Bible

The Whalebone Theatre
The Keeper of Stories

Anything by Stacey Halls or Karen Swann

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 12/07/2024 21:29

These Silent Woods or A Little Life

mindutopia · 12/07/2024 21:57

I second the Poisonwood Bible, one of my favourite books.

I also really enjoyed Wally Lamb, She’s Come Undone and I know This Much is True

I’m not sure they’re similar, but I read them in the same sort of era when I was into those kinds of books.

Alice Hoffman is a good pick - in particular, The Probable Future. Such a good book.

@weareallqueens i am reading Girl A at the moment and cannot get past chapter 3 (ish) should I persist?

Memoirs of a Geisha is a fantastic read.

Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow

Try The Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy - not lightweight, but the same geography and a beautiful writing style. I loved WTCS because of the love Conroy gave me for this region.

I've read a lot of these books and mostly don't personally see a link- do you want recommendations or something in a similar vein? Barbara Kingsolver has a lot of the natural world, American outdoors and drama so think she's worth a shot. Particularly the early stuff.

weareallqueens · 12/07/2024 22:28

@Timeforicecream Depends what you like I suppose! I'm not one for misery lit but enjoyed how the stories played out.

I don't know.

I always feel overwhelmed when trying to choose something and just stopped reading because of it really.

I have the same thing! You need a great easy to get into book to get the juices flowing. Some good suggestions up here. I just read the Lucy Barton novels by Elizabeth Strout and really recommend. One way I choose books is what's 99p on Kindle or Apple Books. I've read some great and random books that way. I also like easy reads (but still good stories with decent writing) like Daisy and the Six or anything by Jilly Cooper! Good luck x

I read My Absolute Darling either directly before or directly after Where The Crawdads Sing and I found them similar and really enjoyed both, I think My Absolute Darling is by Stephen King. I’d never have picked it up for myself in a million years but I enjoyed it. It’s very bleak though and I’m not sure I’d read it again.
