Glad my son is older now (talk of no school on Monday)

I'm hearing all this stuff about schools being closed on Monday if England win.
I hope they do win, but had to breathe a sigh of relief that my son is old enough not to need childcare.

I've gone through the years (lone parent) of juggling childcare with a full time job over the school holidays and with 6 weeks of summer looming I would not have felt joy at having another day spontaneously thrown at me.
I guess the schools will have to remain open for the kids whose parents can't find childcare or vulnerable children, but it's then really hard for those kids, and those parents who are already feeling stretched.

That's all.

The state schools here are all open from normal time although they are having a slightly later register (up to 10) for any child who is up late watching the football. Private schools have closed now for the summer.

AnneLovesGilbert · 12/07/2024 19:22

How many schools have you heard are doing this?

VenusClapTrap · 12/07/2024 19:24

I hadn’t heard about this. How ridiculous.

This is untrue and simply ridiculous.

Benjilassi · 12/07/2024 19:28

Oh, I'm wrong...maybe I just went down a rabbit hole after hearing some kids or reading something about hoping the schools would be shut.

I do know my local primary is allowing them to come in late.

I teach in a primary school. We'll be open as normal and children can come into class from 8.30am as usual.

But the senior team are assuming that many parents will let their children stay up late to watch the match so are allowing them to arrive late. No late mark if they're in by 10.15.

I suppose the thinking is that as it's so close to the end of term, some parents would be tempted to let their children have the whole day off if they're tired on Monday morning. This way, there will be a decent amount of teaching and learning going on.

What a load of bollocks. It's not even a World Cup.

The chokehold that a team of overpaid men kicking a ball around seem to have on half of the UK at the minute is frankly embarrassing

Classic case of do not believe the bullshit you read online.

Its true round my way, plenty of schools allowing a 10am start as if 1 hour makes all the difference.

iwouldgoouttonightbut · 12/07/2024 19:55

@PalmelaHanderson allowing a later start but still opening at the usual time, which is what is happening at some schools,is completely different to schools not being open at all

Covidwoes · 12/07/2024 20:01

I'm a teacher, and can confirm this is a load of rubbish. 😂

Good point!

NerrSnerr · 12/07/2024 20:12

Our school are opening as normal.

I will let my children stay up and watch, we let them watch all major finals and any England game (male and female) as well as other sporting events they're interested in.

Football isn't everyone's cup of tea and that's fine, but there's no need to insult others who may want to watch (like pp have).

Mulledmead · 12/07/2024 20:15

Our school has sent an email out advising kids can come in as late as 10am.
It's frustrating as my kids will feel mightily put-out that half the school rock up later in the morning. I have to be in work at the normal time so the kids will be in at the usual time (football or not!)

There’s a big difference in simply watching the it and thinking that the entire country should get an extra bank holiday for a win.

NerrSnerr · 12/07/2024 20:21

@Malahide How many people are asking for a bank holiday? I haven't seen anyone (nor have I seen anyone asking for school to shut). I suspect most fans are in the 'watching it for fun' camp and not 'chokehold' camp.

leeverarch · 12/07/2024 20:22

Children need to learn that you need to be at school (and later, work) on time. Staying up late does not entitle you to a lie-in the next morning just because you feel a bit tired.

positivewings · 12/07/2024 20:24

I pleased i dont have to deal with schools anymore.

I suspect many of the parents will have hangovers and be the ones needing the lie in and being late, which is why the children will be able to be dropped off later. Better than being off school altogether which is probably likely in some cases.

Pieceofpurplesky · 13/07/2024 01:00

It's simply down to attendance figures. They would be low on Monday as parents wouldn't be bothered taking kids in as it's the last week. Moving the time for an hour to allow them a lie in means that more will attend - lots of (not working) parents may enjoy that extra hour too.

By not working I mean many people may have taken a day off
