50 things before you're 50

Has anyone done anything similar to this? If so, what did you include? I'm a few years off but really like the idea, more of a personal challenge to get me out of my comfort zone and doing some different things, sone learning, going to places etc

-Swim 50 lengths in your local pool or take on another similar challenge
-Write 50 things you are thankful for
-Go through all the photos on your phone and choose your 50 favourites and get them printed
-Save 50p in a jar every day until it’s full and think about a charity to share it with or a goal
-Do some family research or timeline and come up with a key life event every year for the last 50 years etc.

Happy 50th op.

Ask friends and family to help you make a playlist of 50 songs and why they love them. Discover new music.

Or to recommend 50 films to watch, 50 places to go, 50 books to read, 50 inspiring women.

A friend has come up with 50 things to do (milk a cow, walk on a moor, make a pot, ride a horse) and has invited friends to choose 1 or more to spend time with her doing which is such a great idea. New experiences and great memories.

I don’t have 50 repetitive ideas
Just bucket list style ideas

skydive (I’m not brave enough to do this)

learn to ice skate

be painted in a life drawing/painting class!

Climb a mountain

waterski

travel around a country like America or Australia.

Try and overcome a phobia

join a dance class and learn to eg salsa

sign up to an amateur dramatic society

learn to play an instrument

do a fundraiser for your chosen charity

learn to drive something you can’t - eg fly a small plane

Change your hair to a dramatic colour

Thanks all, I'm definitely thinking more the bucket list type things, although not too many large ones as I'm poor 😂

I do like the suggestions for books and music though.

Adding roller skating (I could when younger but scared ill hurt myself now!)

I understand you're asking for inspiration, but I think it's important that this list should be really unique to you and your values.

Who are you as a person? What sort of things bring you fulfilment? What do you want to look back on when you're in your 90s? What things would you like to have poured into?

I know some might scoff, but I'm trying to work on my mindset, appreciate the small everyday things as well as the big and exceptional, and lean into who I authentically am aside from who social media/popular culture and my family of origin tell me/told me I should be.

SallyWD · 13/07/2024 08:57

I'm turning 50 this year and feel exhausted thinking about squeezing in 50 bucket list type things! Haha!
There were several epic thing I had on my list for my 50th. I'm postponing them though as we've had an expensive year. Definitely want to do the before my 60th though:
A trip on the Orient Express (a big dream of mine!)
An African Safari
A trip to South America (including Peru)

Bemyclementine · 13/07/2024 10:13

@TeaAndSmithwicks you're right, and some ideas are just not for me. But others ideas might just stir my memory, such as a PPs suggestion of learning ice skating. Going Roller skating has been something I really want to do (the dc go, I watch....) but had kind of forgotten about.

OP posts:
Bemyclementine · 13/07/2024 10:14

@SallyWD I can't afford those big ticket things sadly, but just to say, I'm not 50 for 3 years,so I'm giving myself some time to get through it!

Try a new cultural event that you've not been to before, ballet or opera or summer outdoor classical concert, or something at the Albert Hall or a local rock festival.

Eat one new-to-you food every month of your birthday year.

Complete a local walk like SW Coastal path, Tarka trail or if you're in London the London Loop or Capital ring.

Starlightgazing · 13/07/2024 14:21

I recall you did the mighty hike earlier on this year, how about running a marathon instead of walking it ?
Learn how to make something on a potters wheel, you get to keep it afterwards, and you can do it with your dc. I did a days course with my dd a few years back, was a fab day, and of course, dd was much better at it than me, really enjoyed it though.
Join a choir, if you can hold a note, and do a public performance.

Namechangedforspooky · 13/07/2024 14:27

I didn’t do a full bucket list but a couple of mine were glass blowing and indoor skydiving.
Also getting a 1 to 1 reading with a medium and abseiling, doing a resin workshop, climb the O2, speedboat down the Thames (Thames Rocket)

I’d like to try open water swimming and skydive but not sure if I’m brave enough for either!
It doesn’t need to be a list to complete in a year either. I viewed it as a list of ideas to do as i saved the funds / had the time

Bemyclementine · 13/07/2024 18:10

@Starlightgazing I did! I don't have the time to devote to training to run a marathon though. Maybe a 10k or a half would be doable.

Pottery is on the list!

OP posts:
Starlightgazing · 13/07/2024 19:14

@Bemyclementine Well done for doing that, a shorter run is probably a better idea.
Honestly, the pottery day was so much fun, it’s a good thing to do.
I’ve always fancied glass blowing, or having a go at blacksmithing and making something gorgeous for my home.
