Libby book borrowing

I use a combination of BorrowBox and Audible at the moment to listen to ebooks but I’m finding that BorrowBox in my area is a bit rubbish! I can very rarely find a book that I’m looking for and I’m almost at the point of giving up with it which I hate because I’ve always wanted to support our library.
Does anyone have any experience of Libby? I’ve tried to make an account and it seems to be more of an American thing?
If anyone has any suggestions for audio book borrowing I’d be very grateful!

Spotify has audiobooks too, some of them are paid extras but some are not. The Phillip Pullman and full cast recording of Northern Lights is on for free at the moment, and a (probably not entirely legal) copy of the first 2 Harry Potters. There is also some slightly more obscure stuff that is read by fans and put up as podcasts.

Do you mind saying what council you’re under OP? Or councils if you work somewhere else or are near the borders of another county.

@Dreamingofwalden to address your Libby/Kobo question: if you want to add books over WiFi you need an OverDrive account (OverDrive is the company behind Libby app) and then login to OverDrive on the Kobo. I use the Libby app on phone to browse library holdings and then sync button on Kobo as find that easier than browsing library books directly on Kobo.

Yes, different councils use different services. I'm a member at few different ones and like libby better as it works with my kobo without having to connect it to the laptop.
Some authorities allow you to sign up fully online, some are still in the dark ages. Check out neighbouring authorities.

hexsnidgett · 12/07/2024 21:02

You can log in with multiple library cards on the libby app, but my kobo (Clara?) Only syncs with one at a time.

Starch1e · 12/07/2024 21:10

Two examples I've found of libraries you can join without living in local authority/county:

Oxfordshire libraries uses OverDrive/Libby and allows anyone in UK to join, but you still have to visit one of the libraries with ID https://www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/residents/libraries/using-library/join-library

And you can join City of London libraries if you work in City. Again have to physically visit with ID to complete registration.

Apply to join the library | Oxfordshire County Council

It's free to join a library.

Have just been talking about this to DH, he joined and recommends it big time! X

Look at virtual library cards - I have a Chicago one and it's been brilliant. You need an address and phone number in the city (I used a big business) and it has all sorts of books.

I did this and my card has been flagged as having an invalid address 🤣

Hi @hexsnidgett I can borrow books from 2 libraries on my Kobo. I'm afraid I can't remember exactly how I set it up, I think it's through creating an OverDrive account using email address here: www.overdrive.com/account/sign-in (rather than signing in with library card) and then adding multiple libraries. I can see the 2 libraries on OverDrive via web but only 1 in the settings on Kobo.

Funfaxfan · 12/07/2024 21:43

It depends on your council library. Ours uses overdrive and the content is awful. I use audible and much prefer it. I also have an account with queens library in America who do out of state membership for about $50 and allow you to download ebooks straight to kindle.

Thanks, I have just read the article. It is useful.
I had already set this up but the offering is very paltry which is a shame. I will continue to look out for books on sale via Kobo.

Milliways · 13/07/2024 21:18

I use Libby, BorrowBox and CloudLibrary across 2 libraries as we live on a county border. Libby is great if you can find a suitable library.

OldTinHat · 13/07/2024 21:45

I can't find anything on Borrowbox anymore. I think I've listened and read everything.

My DM has Libby, and I know her reservations drive her up the wall, whereas, with BB, they are always spot on with the reservation date.

I've given up atm. I'm relying on BBC isounds.
