Ryanair question

niadainud · 12/07/2024 11:49

I have somehow persuaded myself to fly with Ryanair next month after swearing never to do so again after a shitty experience about 15 years ago.

Obviously I can look up their hand baggage dimensions online, but what I'd really like to know is whether, if my bag is larger than these dimensions but can be squashed to meet requirements / fit in a measuring cage, I will get away with it?

I absolutely do not want to pay them a penny more than I absolutely have to!

Thank you.

It's not worth the risk if you don't want to pay extra. Stick with the dimensions or less.

In my experience yes, it's fine. If it fits in the box they can't argue even if you are pulled.

The point is so you use the under seat storage not the overhead cabinets. (Or if you buy an extra bag, so it fits in the overhead cabinets).

Can be stressful but yes I have done it with brute force!! and it worked thank goodness 😂good luck

"If it fits it flies" so I think it should be fine.

I try not to fly Ryanair but flew with them last weekend. My underseat bag looks v big but as long as it is not too full it can squash down to the required size.

I was not asked to put it into the bag measured but saw that a few other people were targeted and on each flight at least one person who had a large cabin bag to go in the overhead lockers was told it was too big and they would need to check it at an additional cost.

What I did notice onboard was that the way the metal supports for the seats are fixed into the floor the aisle seats have a narrower space to store bags than the middle or window seats. I got allocated an aisle seat each way. My bag still fit just but it was a squeeze. The guy in the middle seat arrived with a bag and a small tote bag and easily squashed both in.

So my advice is don't overpack, wear your chunkiest shoes to travel in, put any jumpers or jackets near the top so you can put them on if the bag is too big for the measurer or to push under your seat. It will be fine.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to pack extremely lightly, but I've just done masses of decluttering and really don't want to buy a new bag just for this one flight.

Regular users of Ryanair (like me) - could get a Cabin Max Metz bag. It is exactly the dimensions and honestly it's like a Tardis, you can fit a ton of stuff in there.

If trying to bring something outside of the dimensions use a soft squashy backpack and get a middle seat. Yes, there is so much more underseat room in the middle compared with aisle and window.

You're welcome.

Re your ‘experience about 15 years ago’ I can confirm they are, if anything, worse than they used to be.

My daughter used them a few months ago (for W Europe) and they treated her like dirt. Their staff seem to be incentivised by money pulled in from vulnerable customers.

If you dare to push with a complaint, they will then insult you. In writing.

They are STILL the absolute pits.

Have a good flight!

Fupoffyagrasshole · 12/07/2024 15:12

Just pack light it should be fine

i travel Ryanair back and forth London to Dublin about 20 times a year with 2 kids - never had a single issue - I’ve flown aer lingus and ba sometimes too if flights are cheaper sometimes and it’s all the same 🤷‍♀️

i pay for 1 10kg checked bag and it’s about 12£ usually and then I just take a back pack on the plan with what we need

never get all this drama of il never fly with them - I just book whatever’s cheapest and going at a suitable time for me - pointless to pay more money for another airline

don’t care about the customer service or if they are trying to sell me stuff - just ignore it and don’t buy anything and i couldn’t care less if the staff are friendly or helpful or not really - I just want to get from one place to another

MiddleAgedDread · 12/07/2024 15:16

I agree with @Fupoffyagrasshole I don't think they're any worse (or better) than any of the airlines, and that includes the "non budget" airlines such as BA who now all charge extra for baggage and seat selection etc anyway!

Hi
Have not had problems with ryanair as do premium economy. But be careful on the weight and dimensions of the overhead case (Venice weighed it)
10kg 55 x 40 x 20cm if asked to put it in the frame put it wheels up as they can rotate and jam
underseat luggage is 40 x 20 x 25 but I put all my electricals in there as they weigh heavier ( there is no weight stated on this bag)- also more convenient for security
I actually love the strictness of their policies- it has over the years trained me to pack efficiently and not take more stuff than I need. I can easy do 2 weeks on 10kg and a handbag.

Sad to admit this but I draw out a diagram before packing so I can see what goes with what to make maximum outfits!!

You take as you find🤷‍♀️…..I’ve never had a real issue with them….been flying with them for years…..delays are few and far between and then only 15 to 30 mins….,apart from one time there was no available aircraft and the delay was 3hrs 5mins….was told to log onto my account and claim …..2 days later a full flight refund was deposited into my account.
Never had a problem with luggage size and have been a bit over size on occasion….always found the staff courteous…..they are always the cheapest when I go to book and have better flight times than their rivals and fly from both my local airports….if anything I think they have improved over the years

Longma · 12/07/2024 16:13

I think my backpack is technically about a cm too big using their dimensions, but it's soft and squishable. It's never once been questioned in any flight. It fits under the seat in front no issue

JengaCupboard · 12/07/2024 16:21

I fly short haul on the regular with God-awful Ryanair as I have limited option, and since Spring this year they seem to have become increasingly strict. Lots of people arguing that their case is standard size but the wheels cause it not to fit into the gauge.

Saw a guy literally kick them off his case the other week at Birmingham as they were going to charge him £70 otherwise. If your bag is squish-able you'll likely be OK however anything case-like I wouldn't gamble with now.

I don't feel like they used to check you at all, and now its rife! Maybe profits are down!!

Unlike Easy-Jet who I'm fairly sure you could board at the gate with a travelling circus and no-one would comment... for now!
