Stain resistant white polos!

TraumaSalt · 10/07/2024 09:52

Starting school in September and I need to buy plain white polo shirts, child is incredibly messy so I know they will take a beating.

Any advise on what to buy and how to care for them?

Thank you!

They are going to get ruined with pen and paint. Buy cheap and bleach until you need to buy more. Also, lower your standards to mean that "clean but marked" is acceptable 😂

Exactly this. It's fighting a losing battle otherwise.

To my dying day I'll never understand why so.many schools insist on white polos for young kids.

You can get most stains out with Vanish gel and sunshine.

Unfortunately whiteboard marker (which they use every day for writing practice) does not come out. I just accept tops will be marked and send him in in them anyway, until they're just too bad.

On The plus side, white is readily available, cheap and easy to bleach if necessary.

The most practical would be fabric in the style of Jackson Pollock.

Just buy an extra five pack in the Tu 25% off offer, accept that they will get wrecked, and replace as necessary. I throw them in the mixed wash and spend zero time trying to look after them - they are doomed anyway.

YouAndMeAndThem · 10/07/2024 10:21

Do they have to be white? Our primary school colour is red so I have started buying red polos instead as we went through about 10 white polo shirts in the first 2 terms! They always get sun cream stains on the neck too 🙈

TraumaSalt · 10/07/2024 10:40

Sunshine ☀️ chance would be a fine thing! 🤣

I shall embrace the Jackson Pollock look!

White polo shirts need to be Teflon coated.

DappledThings · 10/07/2024 10:55

Pasta/baked bean sauce comes out with Vanish spray, Glo-white sachets and sunlight. Marker pen stains are a fact of life that I ignore.

RookieMa · 10/07/2024 10:57

Ariel gel always gets my whites white and bicarbonate of soda

I like the m and s ones for my DS who gets them pretty messy, they wash and iron well (sorry I do iron) the cheaper ones don't last I've found.

RampantKrampus · 10/07/2024 11:16

Lidl are doing their uniform for a fiver offer at the moment. I’d just grab as many polos as you can.

Luckily DS’s school allow navy so 5 have lasted him a year and still look pretty good - although a couple do have holes from enthusiastic scissor use 🙄

I buy a set of Dr. Beckmann stain removal solutions off Amazon. Small bottles as a kit.

There's one for blood and ice cream (because, well, blood and ice cream. I dunno. Periods and their cravings? Anyway, it's great!)
Oils and fats
Nature and cosmetics (mud, dirt, and well, make-up)
And one for grease (Bike chain grease! We live this nightmare!), candle wax, tar.

You can go on Amazon and choose ones individually to add to the kit. Have a look. It's life saving stuff!

The Holy Grail! I agree with pp's - lower your standards. Suncream stains never come out, let alone paint, crayon, felt tip, tomato.

Brendabigbaps · 10/07/2024 11:26

agree with everyone else, they will get marks. As long as they are clean you’re good to go.
i use Ace that comes in a bottle but I put it in a spray and use that, gets most things off and cheaper than buying banish or ace spray.
bleach them all at the end of every half term.

Aldi pack of two for £1.75 buy plenty 😊
