Is there any hope that people will eventually stop saying 'Simples'?...

...especially about really complicated things?

Hate it so much

Or if 'Simples' dies, will 'End of' just come back?

It's only an idiom. I could care less if people use it now and then.

Simples? Like the Meercat advert?

Oh you have to kill them. Seriously. Nobody can be expected to put up with people who quote the same advert for five years. Are they still trotting out lines from Harry Enfield characters? It’s time for them to go.

I was with you until the diss to repeating 30 year old catchphrases @Whothefuckdoesthat... I may be guilty of that one. I try not to do it as the clincher to a political argument at least.

Not sure what do you mean by than, now I’m all confused-dot-com.

Don't have a cow, man.

I still remember the moment when I realised that it was popular to repeat the same line from the same advert. In a short space of time I'd heard several people all repeat the same thing. This was about 30 years ago. Whilst I don't know anyone who says "simples", it's a fad that sticks. Whenever it goes out of fashion something else equally "fun" will replace it.

As soon as I pressed post, I had a moment of clarity where I remembered telling DH that I was not his slave when he asked me to pass the salt, so I’m going to amend my statement to the most annoying catchphrases from Harry Enfield.

I meant the rest though.

cupcaske123 · 09/07/2024 23:32

Hate it as well. Doesn't seem to be as prevelant though, I think it's thankfully dying out

SoupDragon · 09/07/2024 23:35

"End of" has never gone away. Especially on MN.

FrogNToad · 09/07/2024 23:40

Yes indeed End of is back already. Or never actually went away.

I wonder if people using Simples now are still of an age that they know they are quoting a meerkat on an insurance advert? Maybe there is a new generation of Simplestons who are just repeating a phrase they have heard other using and don't realise the origins? Maybe it's here to stay!
