No wasps this summer?

I haven’t seen a single wasp since summer began. I’m in the south east. Has anyone else noticed a lack of wasps? Is it too cold for them? I don’t even see one when we had the brief hot spell! Not complaining as I hate them but it’s also a bit strange…!

I was thinking the same about judges. Haven’t really been bitten this year.

😂😂😂

I’m concerned about the absence of bees this year. Our garden (also in the SE) is usually humming with large numbers of honey bees and many different types of bumble bees. This year only a handful. The clover is currently in flower on our lawn and not a single bee. It makes me very sad and worried.

I don’t think it’s just the cold and rainy weather recently because it has been the same since the spring, including a couple of weeks ago when we had many days of sunny weather. Anyone else notice this?

And yes only seen a handful of wasps too (queen ones early in the season). Normally we have several nests in our eaves!

We have flowering clover right now and the grass just looks alive with all the bees! Honey bees and bumble bees. I'm SE London.
Had loads of hoverflies this year but I'd noticed a lack of wasps.

AlisonWonderbra · 12/07/2024 19:09

Too early. They'll be everywhere in late August.

TheFormidableMrsC · 12/07/2024 19:13

I haven't seen any actually and I live semi rurally. We also usually get a lot of hornets. I suspect a hot spell will bring them out.

ShiftySquirrel · 12/07/2024 19:18

I've not seen much by way of insects generally yet. There was a flurry in the spring, but it's been very dull and damp since then.

Slugs on the other hand...

Fontainebleau007 · 12/07/2024 19:19

I've plenty around where I am. Doesn't help im terrified of them 😂

Gorgonemilezola · 12/07/2024 19:21

Hardly any bees and no butterflies. Even on the lavender and buddleia. It is worrying.

FuzzyStripes · 12/07/2024 19:22

Also in the SE and one of our outbuildings has an active nest in it, so plenty of wasps near it.

OrigamiOwls · 12/07/2024 19:24

I haven't seen any wasps this year. Bus also I've not seen any summer yet either.

LightSpeeds · 12/07/2024 19:24

I'm not really seeing any bees at the moment. There were a lot of couple of months ago but, now, almost none (I've seen quite a few dead or dying, though, on pavements 😔).

Wasps tend to come out later in the summer here (if you can call it that).

I have a big bunch of cinnabar moth caterpillars in my garden though (got some very tall ragwort this year) and three cinnabar moths 'hanging round'. Fabulous.

Hardly any bees, no butterflies ... not seen a wasp. Maybe they know something we don't (not making up a conspiracy theory here by the way, just an observation)

Buddleia abound here but not a butterfly in sight, nor honey bee,
still awaiting suicidal wasps in the house

TheFormidableMrsC · 19/07/2024 11:35

Just had my first wasp of the summer having not seen a single one despite living semi-rurally. However, the Buddleia in my NDN's garden doesn't have a single butterfly on it, despite being in full bloom. That is definitely unusual. Last summer it was covered in them.

Caroparo52 · 20/07/2024 14:04

Everything behind insect wise due to cold wet spring and early summer. Just put wasp guard onto my bee hive today because as sure as day follows night the honey robbing blighters will come

HauntedBungalow · 20/07/2024 14:07

Finally discovered the one upside of climate change!

Izzynohopanda · 20/07/2024 18:31

I said upthread the midges (judges) haven’t been around. I spoke to soon. They’re now getting their revenge and using me as target practice.

HoppityBun · 20/07/2024 18:32

Lots and lots of people have noticed the lack of all sorts of insects. Red flag

bergamotorange · 20/07/2024 18:34

DinnaeFashYersel · 12/07/2024 18:16

Hurrah.

Wee bastards. I'm happy if they never come back.

They're really important, lose the insects and we lose everything.

These type of comments make me despair - the loss of insects is really serious.

gamerchick · 20/07/2024 18:36

Its not time yet. Next month they'll be pests as they always are.

Itneverrainsinsocal · 21/07/2024 09:09

I’ve saw ONE last week! It was hovering around a doorway. That’s it so far… I’m now fearing a massive influx of angry wasps to make up for all their sleepy time 😱

We 100s of different types of bees and butterflies in my garden this year but no wasps. Strange as we fruit trees as normally the wasps love the fruit. Enjoying the different bees though some I've not seen for a few years.

UltramarineViolet · 31/07/2024 07:57

August BH is normally peak wasp weekend when the little buggers reek havoc at food festivals and country fairs across the UK

WouldUSayImWorthy · 31/07/2024 07:58

They're literally all in my shed.

BobnLen · 31/07/2024 08:04

August is peak wasp, we are not there yet

Strawberriesandpimms · 31/07/2024 08:06

Too early. They're usually out and about when our plum tree is finished fruiting - they get tipsy and cross on the dropped fruit! 🐝 😂
