Started Dopesick over the weekend. I binge watched it as it was so gripping, and I’ve just finished it.

Wow is all I can say. An absolutely brilliant series - but also extremely heartbreaking, sad and distressing viewing. I just can’t believe that it’s all true.

If you’ve not seen it, then I highly recommend it. I know there are other series / docus / movies about the opioid crisis which I am also going to watch now.

Agreed, it’s so good. It pointed me towards a great book on the Sackler firm, called Kingdom of Pain, I think - but you can’t beat the immediacy of the series

Agree, I watched it several years ago with my jaw on the floor.

”demon copperhead” is a reworking of David copper field set in Kentucky and shows the opioid crisis through the eyes of a growing child. It’s a hard read but important. In parts of Appalachia a third of kids are being raised by someone other than their parents due to the opioid crisis - a THIRD.

I wish I believed in hell so that I knew the Sacklers and others would face some actual punishment for their crimes against humanity

Watched it recently, shocking and disgusting in equal measure. Apparently the Nan Golding documentary All the beauty and the bloodshed is brilliant too. Will be watching soon

beguilingeyes · 09/07/2024 08:59

I watched and can't believe that they seemed to have escaped any kind of retribution or punishment for this.

ToBeOrNotToBee · 09/07/2024 08:59

Pain Killer, also on Netflix

Worried137 · 09/07/2024 09:49

Thank you for the recommendations.

It truly is disgusting what they did, and how they put profits over people. Over real human life’s. I particularly found Betsy’s story so incredibly sad.

Is there still a big opioid addiction now in the US? I know you can still get oxytocin but it’s much more controlled.

On the last episode now (already seen painkiller) and I hate how utterly powerless and angry I feel 😢.

NashvilleQueen · 12/07/2024 22:56

It's one of the best things I've ever seen despite the relentless awfulness of the subject matter. Fantastic cast.

AnneLovesGilbert · 12/07/2024 23:02

Utterly compelling. Really worth watching.

Just finished watching this (having read Patrick Radden Keefe's excellent book on the subject with my jaw on the floor) and it is so well done - a very complex story powerfully told. Michael Keaton's country doctor and the repellent Richard Sackler are perfectly played. Lots of other excellent performances too. Just an awful, awful chapter in history which sadly isn't over yet.

ZittiEBuoni · 12/07/2024 23:10

And I cried over poor Betsy.

The book is 'Empire of Pain' btw.
