She's been complaining about pain between her ankle and down a bit towards under foot. It's the strangest location, doesn't hurt evry day.
Doc appt 2 weeks time.

Any ideas??

I would take her to a private physio if you can afford to. I really don’t think a conversation with you without seeing the foot and patient in person is remotely adequate for a medical diagnosis.

My 13 year old daughter has had similar pain recently. We thought she had hurt it through sport but after 8 weeks it was no better so tried to get a drs appointment.
No joy there, she was referred for an mri without it even being looked at 🙄. Husband has private health insurance so we got an appointment with a paediatric trauma doctor. He did an MRI which didn't show anything and suggested the pain could be due to puberty and growing. He has given her daily physio to do which is helping. She has exercises morning and evenings. It still hurts when she does too much but is improving. She also straps it up when it is bad. Her check up is in August but these exercises have stopped her hobbling around for now.

@CakeIsMyFavouriteAndBest thanks.
Do you think perhaps I should book her a physio appt?

If you can get one, it might be worth it. Hopefully it won't be too expensive too. My daughter can do her exercises quite easily herself every day and we are definitely seeing an improvement.

@CakeIsMyFavouriteAndBest thanks..
I guess they can tell me what it might actually be as doc hasn't looked at it?

Or maybe even pharmacy?

My son had this and it was Severs disease.

Our GP diagnosed it as something else initially, but when it got worse, we were referred. I think we went to orthopaedics, who within 5 minutes said it was severs. The doctor we saw said that most heel pain that goes on for more than a week in children is severs. I'd never heard of it but I've since known 2 other kids with it.

My son was given inserts for his shoes to cushion his heel and they showed him exercises to do to help. It got a lot better within a few months but flared up at times through his teen years. At times he couldn't/wouldn't put his heel to the floor as it was so painful. The doctor gave him a note to cover PE lessons and he had to stop doing sport when it was bad.

He's an adult now and absolutely fine, which the doctor said would happen as it's to do with growing and their growth plates.

As well as using the inserts for school shoes, my son found that he felt comfortable in Nike Air trainers, which makes sense I suppose as they have a bubble to cushion impact on the heel.

I definitely would as the doctor hasn't even examined her. That's really bad form. If you can afford it or have private healthcare, I'd book with a private paediatrician as a starting point.

Silly question but where would I get proper heel inserts for her

We were given them by the hospital but they do similar things in places like Boots the chemist if you go to a decent sized one and look in the foot care section. You could try them and see if it helps.

@AcrossTheOceanMissingHome thank you.

Just to give you an idea of what you're looking for at Boots, ours looked like this and just literally fitted in the heal part of the shoe. I think they come in different sizes so make sure look out for that.

Thanks again, she was hobbling today and our gp didn't even see her. I've got more help off here

No problem. I really hope the inserts give her some relief. I remember my son struggling to walk with it and it's awful seeing your kids in pain. I'm disgusted for you that the GP didn't even see her, but sadly, I'm not surprised.

ConsuelaHammock · 10/07/2024 11:58

I want to say I can’t believe the doctor wouldn’t see her but I’m not remotely surprised. If it is severs,(which it does sound like) the best thing is rest and painkillers when it gets really painful. I bought my son’s shoe inserts from boots and he said they helped. On bad days he just couldn’t even walk without crutches.
She needs an X-ray.

ConsuelaHammock · 10/07/2024 12:00

StarieNight · 09/07/2024 08:48

@ConsuelaHammock did they mention vitamin d deficiency? On NHS this is mentioned

No mention of Vit D deficiency.

StarieNight · 23/07/2024 08:38

Update / I took her to walk in center who kindly agreed to see her even though technically they shouldn't. She said if this has been going to on it could be severs.
She thoroughly looked at the foot and proded it and saw her walking on it.
So I'm not entirely sure what I'm aksing the doc for now except perhaps an x ray or crutches etc

Spoke doc again really severs and he said walk in it, don't use crutches, excersise to do but didn't give us any.

My son had issues with this and with collapsing arches. We got arch supports and we're advised to stretch by standing on a step on toes and lowering the heals or using one of those stretch elastic bands. Apparently its quite common as they grow. Ds seems to be growing out of it now.
