Le football has become ’Le foot’. I suppose like we say “He’s watching footy”. Both are acceptable.

Hoppinggreen · 08/07/2024 11:17

Its a bit slangy but fine

CornishTeaTime · 08/07/2024 11:17

Is that 100% as it's going in a document

If you were writing the document in English, would you say footy?
If yes, use le foot.
If no, use le football.
That's how I would decide.

If you are writing it then use the full word

Wow, my French teacher taught us "le foot" (e.g. "j'aime jouer au foot") as the only way to say it. She never once mentioned "le football" so I have spent 18 years not realising it was slang.

Not that I have much call to use my rusty French - especially in a sporting context 😅

NormalAuntFanny · 08/07/2024 13:30

Never seen anyone even mention football, it's always foot

CornishTeaTime · 09/07/2024 20:11

French native has confirmed le foot is like us saying footie

My Mum is French as is my stepdad, in conversation with them about it we say le foot or le match. I've never said le football. However I only really ever converse in French with family!
