Lived abroad. Cigarettes were almost free (think less than one shilling for a pack of 20 tipped American cigarettes) and everybody smoked from early teens.
Alcohol was banned (country went 'dry' in the early 60s) but DF brewed his own beer and made a vermouth type wine from raisins which we drank diluted with lemonade. Some people had a still and made hooch! ... 'Flash' and 'White Lightning' were commonly available at teenage parties, aged 14 and up. It's amazing nobody died.
Also drank weak Pimms with lemonade from quite an early age, eight or so, on special occasions.
We had something called 'Sparkling Burgundy', a sweet Australian fizzy red wine at Christmas. Would get given a glass.
DF taught me to drive aged about 15. (Oil company town for employees, quiet roads and don't think I ever saw a policeman. )

When I started my periods, age 13, if I was in pain in the middle of the night, me and Mum would go downstairs and both have a cup of tea and a fag.

Sorry this made me laugh out loud. The quiet moments in the night Grin

I lived abroad. Age 16 my boyfriend (same age) and I caught a train 10hrs away. We stayed with his sister (whom I'd never met), who was only 1yr older than us and was dating a 40yr old. He used to make bourbon and coke every afternoon for us all!
