About 200 miles when I was moving home

OP posts:
Catsinaflat · 07/07/2024 17:36

London - Suffolk to see my boyfriend who had moved away. We were 15 Smile

Glittertwins · 07/07/2024 17:43

Mine drove me over 800 miles for university twice. They combined the outwards with a short holiday which I never ended up getting due to total lack of communication on term dates and a nice stopover in Paris on the return.

My dad drove me to my Oxford interview when I was 17 all those many years ago. I didn't get in haha but he probably was the only one to believe in me and drive from North Yorkshire that distance. I think that's the furthest from memory.

Me too, dad drove me to Cambridge for an interview from Liverpool ❤️

Gettingannoyednow · 07/07/2024 17:44

My mum drove me a 700 mile round trip for a uni open day. I went to the uni in my home town.

dalosnarp · 07/07/2024 17:49

My parents drove me to uni in the first year, 200 miles away. Generally I've been able to use public transport though and not rely on them too much as we're in London.

IceCreamWoes · 07/07/2024 17:51

My dad drove from Essex to Plymouth to pick me up after I dumped my first boyfriend who I'd moved out there to be with. He left at 5pm and got to me at midnight, and drove us straight back. I was 18 and couldn't afford the train fare last minute. This is back in the early 2000s.

He died quite recently, my dad, not the boyfriend, and I'm quite teary having remembered that

newpussmum · 07/07/2024 17:52

I drove my son 80 miles for a specific dental appt - 3 times.

He has transport (he's an adult) but not to go that far.

Really unbelievable thing was that the dentist treating him works at the hospital in the same bloody town as us on a weekend!

turkeyboots · 07/07/2024 17:55

My DDad drove me 2000 miles for a university open day. Central Europe to Devon, and back. He liked driving, and flights were very very expensive in a pre Ryanair world.

TattiePants · 07/07/2024 17:57

My DM did a 360 mile round trip between the NE and NW 2 years ago when I was unwell. There were loads of rail strikes at the time and DH and the DCs were driving in the opposite direction on holiday.

ArseholeCatIsABlackAndWhiteCat · 07/07/2024 17:57

Nowhere. Neither of them drove.Grin

GoingOverToTheDarkSide · 07/07/2024 17:58

I’m doing an 1800 mile round trip drive involving 3 ferries for my DCs to compete in an event this summer.
do I win?! 😂

GoingOverToTheDarkSide · 07/07/2024 17:59

(And I think my DP drove me 1.5 hours to uni. But that was a one time offer!)

TattiePants · 07/07/2024 18:04

Not driving but DD went to visit her friend in Ireland last year (travelled there with friend’s family) then DH flew into Belfast, met DD and they got on the next plane home. Probably going to do it again this year.

HappyAsASandboy · 07/07/2024 19:31

To and from university regularly as terms started and ended and all belongings must be moved; maybe 150miles round trip each time.

The most important times a parent has driven me somewhere was when I called from a random address of someone someone knew )no mobiles then) to say scary people were chasing us from the park and I needed her to come for me. 9 miles each way, no question. And another time, when a relationship broke down and I called just to say "please come and get me" and she came. Also about 9 miles each way.

I will always go for my children. So far happened only once, when my DD was out with friends and called me asking me to send her a shopping list and meet her in Tesco. I whatsapped back "bread, milk and cheese" and set off for Tesco.

When they call, I will answer.

Mum took us from the north of Scotland to a singing competition in Cardiff. Well she actually organised a bus, instead of driving us there herself as there were so many people going. But as a single parent on a minimum wage with very little child support from our self employed father, I'm in awe how she managed to do things like that! Actual super woman!

ScarletWitchM · 07/07/2024 19:54

My mum drove from London to Hastings when I ran away from home aged 14 to pick me up and drive me back home.

i have driven to Manchester to my daughter to help her move out of Uni Halls, drive home and then drive back again 3 weeks later (with all her stuff again) to move into her new shared house. Also I’ve driven up to pick her up and bring her home to London for Christmas when the trains were up the spout (10 hour round trip)

CrushingOnRubies · 07/07/2024 19:56

350 miles on several occasions for drop offs and pick ups from uni

Blackcats7 · 07/07/2024 19:58

Nowhere ever. I either walked, got the bus or train or cycled.

TroysMammy · 07/07/2024 20:01

Nowhere. My Mother couldn't drive then. Father worked shifts and he isn't a Father who interacted with his children so I never asked because the answer would have been no. I went places by bus or train until I passed my test and bought a car.

Duckswaddle · 07/07/2024 20:02

Mine would never have done that for me, but I do, and will always, take my kids wherever they need to be.
My kids are only little at the moment but lots of ferrying about to dance lessons etc.! More than happy to take them wherever for competitions etc.

7catsisnotenough · 07/07/2024 20:05

I drove my son to Cumbria...

Beezknees · 07/07/2024 20:24

I can't drive so I've never driven my 16yo anywhere.

My parents rarely drove me around either, I had a part time job in a pub at 16 and I used to walk there myself. Didn't bother me at all.

Sharontheodopolodous · 07/07/2024 20:28

My mother used to refuse to drive 10 minutes for me
(My brothers?she'd have travelled as far as they wanted)

My in-laws
They travelled from Kent to York
Then york to the Midlands and the following day, they went back to Kent

Just so they could help me move in with dp

They set off at 3am,getting to us around 9-told dp his nan had died and then we set off again

I'll never forget what they did for me that day

StillSmallVoice · 07/07/2024 20:48

Dd was at uni in Devon. I had to save up for the two tanks of petrol to get her there. Didn't appreciate the summer she came home and spent so long talking to her mates on my landline that it went from £20 a month to £80.

All good now with money, big inheritance. Still entitled as fuck.

On the plus side I am looking out the window at a very lovely rainbow

Starseeking · 07/07/2024 21:06

My Dad used to drive me the 150 miles back and forth from uni at the start and end of each term, so 18 times across 3 years.

Not a huge distance, but many a time my Dad would collect me and my friends at 3am from clubs in Central London then drop them all home (local to us), before we went home. He just wanted us all to get home safe.

The best though was when he came to get me when I called in floods of tears saying I needed to leave my EX. He didn't ask any questions, just responded to my call. My Dad is brilliant 😊😊😊
