If you listen to audio books...

How the heck do you stay awake?

I got an audible trial as I'm struggling to read these days and every time I try to listen within minutes I'm dozing off!

I don't listen to them in bed, instead I do while I am driving and dozing off is not an option!

AppleCream · 07/07/2024 04:31

Like @useitorlose I listen in the car. Or while doing housework.

TootsyPants · 07/07/2024 04:32

I listen while I'm driving or cleaning.

I also listen in the car. If I listen in bed, I add a bookmark & set the book to turn off after 30 mins as I can guarantee that I will go to sleep 🤣 - and then go back and listen to the 25 mins I slept through...

ApolloandDaphne · 07/07/2024 05:04

I listen while doing other things: walking the dog, driving, cooking and doing jigsaws. I, like others have said, can't listen in bed or just sitting on the sofa.

GiveMeMySoddingCokeZero · 07/07/2024 05:08

Maybe you're sleep-deprived.

RookieMa · 07/07/2024 05:09

I always fall asleep during my audible books but I'm happy with that

I just re listen to the bits I missed over and over

It just means I fall asleep quickly in a relaxed state

I also listen to BBC sounds

Andtheworldwentwhite · 07/07/2024 05:09

I have certain ones for bed. I have tinitus so cannot bear to lay in the quiet. So I have Sherlock Holmes episodes done as a play and I use the timer. I don’t really listen if is more about the noise.

but I am a huge audiobook fan and get through about three or four a week as I have them playing all day. If ur just starting out listening and u find ur mind wandering. It takes time to train ur brain to stay listening. So I always advise people to start on something they know. I started with Harry Potter so I didn’t worry if my mind drifted off.

RookieMa · 07/07/2024 05:11

I have all the Harry Potter books and have listened to them loads of times

They're very relaxing for me

RookieMa · 07/07/2024 05:16

On BBC sounds there are so many different genres

I like

Sliced Bread
Saturday Live
Nature table
The Archers
Kitchen Cabinet
Just a minute
Desert island discs
Mark Steel
Drama
Health and science

There's loads on there

I play a game - something with little thinking like Candy Crush. It keeps me awake and paying attention to the audiobook every time.

PaleSunlightOfHope · 07/07/2024 05:39

For me, getting to sleep is the main purpose of audiobooks. If the book is new to me, I would much rather read it in the traditional manner, but for dozing off, nothing is quite as effective as listening to the audio version of a book you already know well.

This! I listen to an audiobook through facemask earphones on the nights I'm looking after the baby. It gets me back to sleep much, much quicker than reading and stops my mind from wandering and keeping me awake.

RedRobyn2021 · 07/07/2024 06:14

I listen when I'm cleaning or cooking or walking the dog not in bed 😂

EasterlyDirections · 07/07/2024 06:40

The whole point of them for me is so I can listen while doing other things, mainly driving and gardening/housework. I never just sit and listen to them or listen in bed, I can read conventional books instead at those times.
