Career change ideas

needanewjob123 · 06/07/2024 22:47

Obligatory name change

Please help me

I've been a police officer for 17 years and I have had enough. I started at 18 so haven't had any other job

What can I do that I won't need up being bored out of my mind? Please any ideas welcome.

I have three young children if that makes a difference.

I should also probably mention pay of minimum £50k and DH is supportive as he can work around whatever hours I need to do in a new job

What are your skills? What kind of environment do you want to work in? Do you want to work with people, or policy, or statistics, or animals, or do admin, or IT, etc? Are you willing to re-train? £50K sounds like a lot to me, if you are going to have to start at a low level in a new field and work your way up.

needanewjob123 · 06/07/2024 23:05

I honestly don't care if I work people, helping people anything really just not IT or in an office.

Skills wise I've been a police officer for years so dealing with sensitive situations, sensitive data, faced paced environment, athletic, great under pressure, fine with being in court, able to cope with stressful situation, empathetic, going above and beyond my role, team player but can work well alone, driven, confident etc and I've been detective for the past 6 years so all the obvious skills, time management, team management, able to manage teams, paperwork, great with people, rotas, encouraging you get the jist

Just can't do anything in IT as only have the basics (word, excel, Microsoft paint 😂) and I think working in an office would be too boring for me

I'd have to have a minimum of 50k as I take that home without overtime and I do a lot of overtime over the years.

Maybe I could go to 45k

Private security? Working for high end/net worth individuals? Private investigation?
Something like GCHQ, MI6, one of those 'james bond' government departments?
Working for an airline/aerospace/logistics/shipping co managing teams on the ground?
Construction management, HGV driving, train or bus driver?
Obviously you'd need training in most of these but they'd willingly take people from the police as a starting point I'd imagine.

I hear you I did google job for ex police officers and that's what came up.

Security I'm just not built for to be honest and private investigator I just wouldn't know where to start. As for working for high end professionals I'm not sure again how I would even get into it

See this is why choosing a career at 18 is ridiculous. You don't even know who your are then before you know it it's 17 years down the line and you have children and can't continue with the shit show that you chose as a single child free 'kid' and so you don't even know yourself outside of your job

I'm not sure you'll be able to go in a anywhere at the same salary.

That's a v high salary in lots of jobs.

GeneralMusings · 06/07/2024 23:15

And completely agree wrt choosing at 18! I wish I could go back.

I think you are right. I do have a degree in science but again where would I even start

I doubt you’ll get the same salary in another job. This is why people end up “trapped” in careers they don’t enjoy any more, because they can’t earn the same salary elsewhere.

I used to go to an osteopathy clinic which had final year students. I was always amazed at the jobs they'd came from- several were ex-police officers who wanted a career change!
I believe the course is part or full time. Once qualified, you could rent a room and set your hours, convert a garage/garden room or work in a practice/gym etc. My London osteopath charged £70 for an initial visit then £60 for subsequent ones. I've since moved 2hrs away, so its a little less now. Just another idea to put to you, especially as you have a science background.

Looking on job sites the only places that are going to get me similar or more that 50k is office jobs 😭 such as civil service, HR etc but my personality will clearly have to have an adjustment. It's my adhd which means I will struggle in an office. It's it an excuse it's just a fact

I know of ex police who have gone into ward management within the local council. Salary circa £55k, needs experience of partnership working, very varied workload = days are never the same...

Have a look at careershifters.org and sign up for their mailing list, every week they feature a couple of people who have switched to very different careers.

I have a friend who moved from the police to being an investigator for the Health & Safety Executive. Not suggesting this exact job but to show you have the right experience and that the salary is not miles off HSE job

ReignOfError · 06/07/2024 23:41

Better link, direct to the HSE which shows where they want people:

Senior Investigator | HSE Careers

I work at a uni and we have used this company to investigate student complaints …. Not sure how much you want to get away from policing….
https://www.intersolglobal.com
some unis sometimes have similar internal roles.

You are unlikely to walk straight into a £50k job when you are new to the field. It does not work like that.

BobbyBiscuits · 08/07/2024 11:05

@needanewjob123 I promise I didn't Google it, I'm glad my suggestions were pretty accurate though.
I hope you find something. Obviously the care sector are crying out for staff, but that would be nowhere near your pay expectations.
Local authority jobs might be a good place to look?
