Can I eat mash left out overnight?

Yesterday I made mash potato's around 6pm and forgot to refrigerate the left overs in the pot. All I used was potato's, butter, milk and roasted garlic mashed together (not sure if ingredients added are relevant as the diary may have spoilt it)

Can i refrigerate it now this morning and have the mash for dinner tonight?

I personally wouldn't because there's milk in it and that might be a bit off by now. It was quite warm last night.

Squit · 06/07/2024 08:39

I would without a second thought.

DoAClassicCamel · 06/07/2024 08:40

Yes, no problem at all.

I wouldn't leave it until tonight, but I would use it for potato cakes this morning because they are fried very hot.

BeanBeliever · 06/07/2024 08:41

Yes - there’s only a small amount of milk, sure it will be fine. I would

MagpiePi · 06/07/2024 08:44

Mmmm, cold mashed potato for breakfast….

Yes, no problem at all.

That said I would eat it and also give it to my DH but anyone vulnerable like a child or elderly person I wouldn’t.

greengreyblue · 06/07/2024 08:47

I definitely would. Heat it through properly.

FutureMandosWife · 06/07/2024 08:48

Heat it up make sure it's hot throughout, I would eat it.

Justleaveitblankthen · 06/07/2024 08:56

Yep, I love my food piping hot anyway, so would reheating 😋

You'll smell it if the milk's gone off.

Bearpawk · 06/07/2024 09:06

I just drank some milk that I didn't realise had been left out overnight - tastes fine.
Your mash will be absolutely fine, just stick it in the fridge now.

Beginningless · 06/07/2024 09:07

Yes I would as long as well heated.

ginasevern · 06/07/2024 09:47

No problem unless you're vulnerable healthwise. Just blitz it in the microwave or use it as an ingredient like fish cakes or cottage pie topping. It's not exactly boiling hot weather anywhere in the UK at the moment.

Moonshiners · 06/07/2024 09:48

Be fine.

1yearplan · 06/07/2024 09:48

I would

Yes! Love cold mash. In fact, I think it tastes a bit weird when it's reheated.

Ficklebricks · 06/07/2024 10:13

You're all gross. Absolutely do not eat. This is why I hate eating at my in-laws, we always get sick from food left out overnight.

Endsofbells · 06/07/2024 10:16

I would not to be on the safe side. Rice and potatoes left out are one of those no nos in my book. My late FIL would leave things out and then offer them up to us. Barf.

HowIrresponsible · 06/07/2024 10:17

You could but the ingredients aren't exactly expensive. Why not make some more.

ThatshallotBaby · 06/07/2024 10:17

Yes I would

HungryLittleCrocodile · 06/07/2024 10:33

No. Sour milk and butter, fly eggs, spider willies.

I'll get me coat.

Chaiilatte · 06/07/2024 10:44

Thank you everyone. I have popped it in the fridge and will eat it later myself, I won't give any to the kids to be safe. I don't think any spider willies are in there, it's a cast iron pot and the heavy lid was on, so can't see a spider getting in😂 did make me laugh though!

If they're leaving fresh cream or raw chicken or similar out, fair enough. But leftover mash isn't going to hurt anyone. My mum used to make a big pot of stew on a Sunday and we ate it for at least a couple of days. It never moved from its place on top of the cooker. Same with vegetable soup (cooked with a whole chicken in it, which we had for dinner) and lentil soup (similarly cooked with a ham joint in it.) Possibly not ideal, but no resulting sickness. Maybe we're built to last in NI😆
