Have a friend’s little ones 1st birthday this weekend and they like Montessori type toys - would these be classed as that? Not something I know much about. TIA

The fruit potentially.

From my understanding of Montessori followers, they don't really approve of play food, preferring the children to prepare their own real food instead. It depends how seriously your friend takes it. Personally I think anyone who objected to those toys you've linked would be a weirdo.

Montessori kitchen play is play with real objects. So a Montessori version of kitchen toys would actually be a real dust pan and brush, a knife that actually cuts etc! Like this: projectmontessori.co.uk/products/montessori-kitchen-tools-13-pieces?srsltid=AfmBOopRr6gCNO46647XRCQyL0X1R71riPEUqlQStmfb5N04j6oVKrfv

They’re cute though. Why do they have to be Montessori? Also children who go to Montessori settings do still play with other toys :)

If Montessori is, as I suspect, code for not plastic tat then they’re perfect. If they are taking it very seriously then it should be a real knife and basket of apples but I don’t think anyone sane is really that militant!

Nope not Montessori, although still lovely gifts

HalfaCider · 31/08/2024 09:27

No, Montessori toys are open ended so a child can use their imagination to decide what to create. For example, a set of blocks could be used to make a castle, a tower or bed for a soft toy. However, the toys you show are lovely and unless the parents are rigid Montessori followers, I'm sure they'd love them.

No, they wouldn’t be - better would be something like some tongs and small china jugs, little trays, little beads for transferring into little bowls, threading activities with different sized beads & ribbons etc - can all be natural materials

Get a real kids' knife.
