You are not working as have young children but your partner you live with is and earns over 2k a month.
If the couple have separated but live together does this make a difference to the claim?

Worth having a look on entitled to, but probably not no if partner earns 2k and you live with them & they financially support the household / the person i.e. they are paying bills etc

Potentially but it depends on a lot of different factors, for example rent or mortgage, childcare etc
Separated but living together and still called a partner would, rightly, be an issue!

Is there a reason you can't work, other than the DC? I wonder if they'd be interested in that. I worked when DH was available for childcare, ie one evening and weekends.

You can actually earn quite a bit combined and be entitled depending on things like rent/amount of children

Depends who is working and if that person is the primary carer for the children. You can claim as single individuals in the same household but you have to declare to UC who may make investigations. When I told UC my ex and I had separated but it would take a while for me to find a new place with children they were completely understanding, but I kept every copy of rental applications in case they were concerned. Of the primary carer is working, they will likely be entitled to UC top ups. If the non-primary parent isn’t working they’ll get a minimum amount, or no UC if they are (unless entitled to the housing element?).

  1. Yes, depending on circumstances. DH earns that and we get a substantial award of UC due to our circumstances.
  1. If you are living separately in all but location, then you would claim as a single parent.

(It's not me)

Thanks this was really helpful. Trying to unpick a situation I'm working with - there will be a proper financial assessment but I suspect couple never separated but she claimed as a single parent. Shared mortgage.
