HELP ME CHOOSE A GIFT!

My friend has just bought a house after 20 years of living in council accommodation. She can finally make a home her own without fear of having to move. She has been busy buying the main big boring essentials for her family and doesn't consider herself to have good enough taste to personalise her home. So what can I buy her to help make her house more homely that she hasn't thought of?

Budget £50. Amazon preferred but can do Next, Tesco or Range as I need it asap.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions, it's much appreciated.

A vase.

Vase and flowers?

Thingsthatgo · 05/07/2024 09:18

A lamp? When I first had my own place I didn't think to buy a table lamp, but I was bought one as a gift. I loved switching it on and thinking of the lovely person that gave it to me.

I bought my niece some mix and match serving and dip bowls . . . she uses them constantly and was really pleased with them. I can't remember which shop I got them in, probably Sainsbury's or T K Maxx but there are some lovely ones around

I was going to say a vase too. The first time I was bought flowers after buying my first house I had to put them in a measuring jug.

That or a houseplant in a pot that matches her style and decor

I'd give her a voucher for a local shop that sells items that fit within her budget (so not John Lewis if the nearest one is 20 miles away and she normally shops at Ikea, supermarkets and The Range) and say mention that you could go on a shopping trip together to choose a vase, cushions, picture frames or whatever she'd like of this sort of thing. Then there's no risk of getting it wrong and her having to pretend to like a lamp that she hates for the next decade.

Vacuum bags, so she can easily store winter quilts

Some ideas, but really depends what your friend likes.

  1. Front door mat. 'Home sweet home', a plain one or a personalised one 'Number 12 Oak rd' 'Burwood lodge' etc
  2. Indoor plant. Monstera, peace lilly, large pot for the window sill with a herb selection growing in it
  3. A heavy, wooden chopping board with/without a good chopping knife
  4. A large, wall mirror
  5. Bird feeder with seed/fat balls. I bought a roamwild one and it only allows smaller birds to feed. If a rat or squirrel climbs on- the door shuts and they don't get any food.
  6. Nice set of wine glasses
  7. Water jug/carafe with water glasses
  8. Mini tool kit- screwdrivers, plyers, hammer. Scissors, cellotape and string was always handy when I moved house.
  9. Or an activity you can do together. Voucher for a wreath making class.

Cushions - if you know her colour scheme
Plant with pot
Nice fruit bowl
Candle with holder

Thanks for the responses so far. I was thinking maybe a set of nice towels, bath mat set, duvet cover, or maybe something for the kitchen. I'm not sure

She doesn't have a colour scheme, she doesn't have confidence in that area

What about a really nice picture frame or a knitted handmade special throw from a seller from Etsy/ebay I love a knitted throw but if money is tight is a luxury x

AuntieDolly · 05/07/2024 18:55

Tkmaxx/Homesense voucher and take her shopping?

thedendrochronologist · 05/07/2024 19:49

Nice houseplant in nice pot
Set of nice nice knives
Set of screwdrivers
A personalised house gift from. NOTH with hide name on

Chopping board sounds good

longtompot · 05/07/2024 21:37

What about some picture frames with the picture hooks and a hammer so she can put up her own pictures/photos without anyone telling her she can't put anything on the walls?
A nice blanket and or a vase with a bunch of flowers?
She must be so excited to have her own place after all that time. When we bought this place we had been in rented for almost 30 years, the last place being over 20 years so I can imagine how she is feeling.
