My 18 yr old is going to go around bars/restaurants looking for summer work. Does he need to take a CV?

Just that really.
Does he need a CV that he can leave with them or just a piece of paper with his address and contact details?

The only work experience he has is paper boy.

I would say a short cv. My 16 year old has a one pager. They are meant to create a cv at school on unifrog I think, you could check if he did so?

Mrsjayy · 05/07/2024 09:01

I wouldn't bother with a paper copy get him to ask if they have anything going and he can do his CV digitally if they ask.

At that age does he have anything to put on said CV? When I was his age I just walked around all the local pubs and asked if they had and work and left my contact details. If he is keen and comes across well he will get picked up and shown the ropes during a quieter day time shift.

Short CV, name, contact details educational achievements, skills and any work experience.

ButtSurgery · 05/07/2024 09:05

Better to have the CV available than not. Target it at bar work. One page is plenty.

Bleurfghjj · 05/07/2024 09:06

Yeah of course, take a CV

PosingPosture20 · 05/07/2024 09:07

Google 'skills based CV' for ideas.

Basic one pager CV with contact details, short personal description, a list of skills (due to absence of work history) then education.

Ds16 tried the 'walking around local bars/cafes/restaurants' approach and nearly all of them asked him for a CV.

Deathraystare · 05/07/2024 09:21

If he has been a paper boy that is something. Proof he could get up and keep a regular job for however long it was. It is at least something!

ladymalfoy45 · 05/07/2024 09:42

I'm surprised he didn't do one at school. Presumably he's just finished college/ 6th Form?
Part of our post 16 enrichment is writing a CV.
If he applies to a chain like Vintage Inns ,Miller and Carter or Green King he can transfer to one near his Uni if he's going.
Paper Boy transferable skills:
Reliable
Excellent time keeping.
Self organisation ( packing the bag with the right papers and working out the route)
Assisting colleagues ( covering another route if needed)
Working less sociable hours ( crack of dawn, also nasty weather)
The unsociable hours point could show he's willing to work over the weekend when others are out on the lash.
Also ( from my own experience) tips are better on a Saturday and Sunday because some dinners are generous when they've had a few.
And if he's really lucky and works behind the bar ,some customers will buy him a drink.
Only ever put a half through and no shorts or shots.

Icanttakethisanymore · 05/07/2024 09:44

Yes, because he needs something to leave with them and a CV is the appropriate thing. Doesn’t need to be long obviously!

ladymalfoy45 · 05/07/2024 09:50

And a CV is always being added to. The sooner he starts one the less hassle it'll be to keep it up to date.
Any hobbies or sports or clubs will have transferable skills.
I love helping my students write theirs ( fully comprehensive state school in deprived area) because they don't think they are good at anything until they tell me what they can do or enjoy.

Great advice!

The last bit made me laugh – I remember a nice man telling me to ‘get myself one’ when I was about 18 working behind a bar and his face falling when I innocently put through a vodka and orange 😂😂😂 I think he had been expecting a half a mild 🙈😉

Toomuch44 · 05/07/2024 10:58

I'd say a short CV with a section on 'Personal Qualities'. Just in case he gets an early bite, know who he might ask for a character reference.

ladymalfoy45 · 05/07/2024 11:26

@Bleurfghjj I'd save mine up for a rare night off.
The best chain I worked for was Toby Inns.
One with a carvery. When we were cleaned down and bottled up the chef would bring out roast potatoes,Yorkshire puddings ,and gravy.

Lavender14 · 05/07/2024 11:28

Yes a short one page one with only relevant information on it. At the very least it's a professional way of leaving his details so they can follow up with him.

Lavender14 · 05/07/2024 11:28

He also needs to get managers name so he can follow up and make sure the cv made it into the right hands.

Yellowflowers7 · 05/07/2024 18:07

I will PM share the one that I created for my son if helps?

AlienShmalien · 05/07/2024 18:14

Yes please @Yellowflowers7

Okay will do, give me 5 mins

VerySadCase · 05/07/2024 18:40

My dd did one at 16 and she was asked for it. Obviously, she didn't have any work experience so at that age, it was mostly predicted grades, voluntary work and school responsibilities etc, as well as personal qualities etc.

Warmfire · 05/07/2024 21:48

Cant attach cv on PM but if you find out how to do it let me know and I will give it a try

Warmfire · 05/07/2024 21:49

Oh and it's me, just had a name change as have had the last one for ages and probably outed myself but too many personal details 🙈

I would get him to knock something together with these sorts of things on, mainly so they have something with name and contact details on, and looks like he is taking it seriously.

thehousewiththesagegreensofa · 05/07/2024 22:35

A tailored CV also shows that he's put a bit of thought into it and hasn't just wandered in on a whim.
