Where do I want to go on holiday?

That's it really.

We have a couple of weeks booked off - loads going on our end (health, jobs, family stuff - all horrible) and it's just crept up on us! Planning on 10 days or so (DH, student DS and me). DS is happy to mooch around with us as long as he is fed!

Not a sun worshiper, happy pottering around archaeological sites and local food markets (love food and cooking new things), people watching, local shops (crafts and art)...

We've loved villas in Italy and touring America and NZ (both too far away and too short notice I guess?).

My health isn't brilliant at the moment (hence the apathy) so no long treks (although I do love long schleps in cities or treks on the country, but I'm not really up for this so much and can't guarantee that I will be able to walk too much at the moment, oh bugger).

I've been looking at travel magazines and websites - originally was thinking Iceland but don't think I can do much touring around (and have been told that it's very expensive and hasn't got huge amounts to see).

Like the sun (not a sunbather at all!) and swimming.

God someone tell me where to go!

Malta? Loads of historical stuff and it's super easy to get around (the local buses are easy to navigate and cheap). Nice food and weather.

Take a look at IcelandAir packages. You could do a week around Boston and 3 night stopover in Iceland. Lots of very cheap, good public pools. You could see the main sights on a Golden Circle tour and Reykjavik is a very compact city.

Sicily, loads of archeological sites, sun, great food, free fireworks courtesy of Etna. If you are up for it (the driving is terrible I admit) i would rent a car and go to agrigento which is an amazing archeological site, Syracuse again lovely old things and had amazing food too as well as Taormina which is on of my favourite places in the world (perhaps look at nearby resorts though if you would find the steep streets too much)

I booked flights with easyJet then accommodation via booking.com

Croatia! Base yourself in Split and then use local ferries to the millions of different islands. Or look at Adriatic Holidays and book one of the sailing holidays round the islands - they are brilliant!

Jet2 do them as well but usually book up early

Naples. Loads, I mean loads, of archaelogical sites nearby as well as mind blowing art, churches and the archaelogical museum. Food, coffee, wine - need I say more, it's Italy! Open air markets including craft, food and antiques. Public transport very cheap and easy. For swimming you can get ferries or hydrofoils to Ischia, Capri or the Amalfi coast. It's a very vibrant city with street art and a bit of a hipster vibe so DS should be quite interested.

Gothenburg and Vrango. Beautiful island for relaxing and seafood and great, chilled out city for a bit of wandering and cinnamon buns as big as your head. Fly into Gothenburg - cheap, short flight, regular - and use buses and ferry to get to Vrango. Nice weather in the summer, lots of delicious herrings (I was surprised). Great spa at the Upper House if you like that sort of thing. Lakes nearby, too. Swedish summer is very civilised.

When? Venice, but not when it’s hot
