If you voted already, did you spoil your ballot?

I just voted - I couldn't align with any of the parties in their current state but I felt spoiling my ballot was not the best move. So I voted. If you voted already today, did you spoil your ballot? If so, is it because you couldn't align with any of the parties 'on offer'?

No. Women gave their lives in the past to allow us the right to vote and I feel that spoiling my ballot would be an insult to their sacrifice.

redwinechocolateandsnacks · 04/07/2024 12:34

@FudgeMcFlurry - absolutely agree.

rainbowsparkle28 · 04/07/2024 12:34

I have voted. Did not spoil ballot. I just don't see the point of spoiling it, you are throwing away in my opinion one of the few opportunities you have to make some change.

Spoiling the ballot paper means you haven't voted. So your question doesn't make sense.

Bluevelvetsofa · 04/07/2024 12:46

I voted tactically

Kpo58 · 04/07/2024 12:48

I wish that there was a none of the above option on a ballot paper for showing protest votes.

flipent · 04/07/2024 12:48

You are making your voice heard, you are saying that the candidates are not good enough and that it common in many constituencies.

Turning up and spoiling your ballet is better than sitting at home and abstaining.

That's exactly what spoiling your ballet is, a protest.

username47985 · 04/07/2024 12:49

I really don't understand why anyone would spoil a ballot. Surely it's better to vote for a party you at least loosely align with.

I would really appreciate someone who did spoil theirs to enlighten me on what they hope you achieve? (I'm not being a knob, I am genuinely curious)

JustPleachy · 04/07/2024 12:51

I think that if you feel strongly enough to spoil your ballot then you should either stand yourself, or organise behind someone else who will. Just protesting against something is disruptive, but not productive. It doesn’t lead to a solution. It feels lazy.

Chemenger · 04/07/2024 12:52

There is always a least bad candidate. I would never spoil my ballot.

Spoiling the ballot is still using your right to vote, but to pointedly and intentionally vote for none of the options (which is different to staying at home). If I’d spoiled, that’s why I’d have done so rather than not bothering at all.

I came very close to spoiling, as none of the parties represent me and my views, and I’m concerned for the future. But in the end, I held my nose and went with the least worst option and hope I don’t regret it.

naturesform · 04/07/2024 12:52

Nobody cares if you spoil your ballot. It's a pointless protest

PortiasBiscuit · 04/07/2024 12:54

If you can’t choose who to vote for, think about who you want to vote against.

Don’t spoil your ballot ffs!

The idea of standing myself is great, but I have no time, and cannot afford to lose my deposit.

Singleandproud · 04/07/2024 12:54

I spoilt my ballot, drew a line through the boxes and wrote" Women = Adult human female, Keep single sex spaces" across the ballot.

I would never not vote because women died to have the opportunity to vote. I used that opportunity to express that no party represented me. That I could be bothered to vote, and would have voted for a party but did not feel able too.

By spoiling my ballot and not voting for one of the two parties (Conservatives and Reform) that align with my most pressing concern then I am not condoning the rest of their policy's that I do not support and think are horrific. I don't want to be a bystander watching those things happening and know that I played a part.

In the past I've normally voted for Lib Dems or Greens - which generally may as well be a spoilt ballot in my area.

mindutopia · 04/07/2024 12:55

I always vote. Have never missed a vote, even when I lived overseas and had to pay £50 to courier it by next day air to make the deadline.

Cornettoninja · 04/07/2024 12:55

to me, it’s the embodiment of complaining but never offering a solution. That said, I’d rather someone engaged and counted amongst the spoilt ballots rather than completely disengage from the whole process.

ultimately though, a spoiled ballot achieves nothing. You’re neither an asset or a risk to any political group so none will seek to understand your reasoning.

WiseBiscuit · 04/07/2024 12:55

I voted for the Conservative candidate.

I haven’t ever spoilt my ballot, I have always voted. Sometimes, like today, it feels like a difficult decision. But I ultimately want to support democracy and whilst I don’t think I will like the result this time that’s ok.

DrRiverSong · 04/07/2024 12:57

No. I considered it but reached a decision not to yesterday.

Not true.

It shows you are willing to get off your arse and vote but the parties have failed you.

This is of more significance than not voting and parties will take notice of that point.

username47985 · 04/07/2024 13:00

@Singleandproud

Who's going to actually see that though? I assumed the vote counters would but that in the spoilt pile along with all the others.

No one is actually going to see/care/act on what you have written. You could just aswell put 'paw patrol for government' and the outcome would be the same.

I genuinely don't understand it.

Singleandproud · 04/07/2024 13:02

@username47985 well Id rather spoil it and write why in the off chance when they count someone sees it, and candidates reps are often around for the count rather than spoil it and write nothing.

Shortfatsuit · 04/07/2024 13:02

I think people who spoil their ballots are kidding themselves if they think that they're making their voices heard. The reality is that there aren't any stats to say how many of the spoilt ballots are protests (or what they are protesting about) and how many are just people who are too stupid to complete the ballot paper correctly.

By all means, spoil your ballots if you wish, but you might as well not bother voting at all. Your paper will be disregarded as irrelevant.

Cornettoninja · 04/07/2024 13:02

RedToothBrush · 04/07/2024 12:57

I don’t think they do tbh. I think they take more notice of voter engagement overall and will put efforts into getting people (especially ones who fit their demographics) out to polling booths. A spoilt vote just means no one benefits from your vote which can neither harm nor benefit any party in the outcome. A spoilt vote is noted briefly as dissatisfaction but not a threat.

perhaps if numbers of spoilt votes were very high then there would be more action by parties but that’s an unknown since it hasn’t happened.
