Operation right before starting secondary school

Ds4 is 11 and been on the waiting list for this operation since 2021. I phoned for an update yesterday before I booked anything non refundable for the summer holidays and also because I need to pay the deposit for year 7 camp. I was told there was a potential date for the end of August which would mean missing the first 2 weeks of secondary school and then having to be at school on his own at the beginning of October while the rest of his year group goes to camp. Also he is in a tutor group with nobody from his primary school which he seems fine with but I was a bit upset about. I also thought it was unnecessary when there are 8 tutor groups and 29 children from his primary school going to that secondary school.

I said this to the secretary but she said if we say no to this date then we will be waiting months for a new one.

Get the surgery done. There's always going to be timing issues when a long recovery is required.

It's not ideal, but I'd have the op. Better than bang in the middle of term.

Thank you. This is the 3rd potential date we've been given over the past 3 years and neither of them were great timing either. I worried about it and then they got cancelled anyway. I am starting to realise there is probably no perfect date for this.

I rang the lady in charge of the waiting list this week and she has said she still doesn't know if ds will have his operation at the end of August or not. I have to pay £100 non refundable deposit on Wednesday for year 7 camp and I don't know whether he will be able to go or not.

Would he be able to go to the camp anyway? What sort of surgery is it? Could he just be there for the fun and not do activities if he's unable to participate?

Thank you. He is having part of his hip bone put into his gum. It really varied but I'm on a Facebook group for parents of children having this operation and some of the children are still struggling months later. He would need to avoid sport for 6 weeks absolute minimum, especially things that could get his face or hip knocked. The camp is things like surfing and total wipe out. If he can't do the activities it would be fairly miserable for him I would think. Also I am reluctant to pay £200 for him to just sit and watch.
