Excruciating knee pain - is there anything that will help?

My poor 78 year old dad has recently been told he needs a hip replacement. For over a year he's been having referred pain in his knee but after seeing an Ortho, had an X-ray of his hip and he has no cartilage left at all. His hip doesn't hurt at all but he's in agony with his knee. You can literally hear the bones in his hip crunching as he walks.

To make it worse, he has Parkinson's so walks with a frame but he's now pretty much housebound. Just hobbling to the loo has him in agony. He was told he needs a hip replacement but goodness knows how long that will take. He can't take anti inflammatories either as he has a heart condition so the only thing he can take is paracetamol.

Just wondering if anyone can suggest anything he can do or take that might somehow help, while he waits for surgery? It's unbearable for him at the moment, especially with all his other health issues.

I had a torn meniscus, which I think is a sort of cartilage in the knee, and the only thing that helped me long term was losing weight, but not sure if that applies to your dad! Short term, a knee brace definitely took some of the strain while I was walking. After much trial and error it was the very simple tight elastic type that was the most useful, but I had to be really careful taking it on and off. Hope your dad feels better soon.
