I fancy doing a spread Saturday afternoon so tell me what you love when you have picky plates / picky tea!

@TheCultureHusks not keen on eels (I'd eat the jelly though). They'd be in a pudding bowl 😁

My DH calls it a run around the table.

Bread sticks
Garlic and onion dip
Veg sticks (cucumber/carrots/peppers)
Hummus to dip veg sticks
French stick with pate to spread/tuna mayo/ham
Bowls of different crisps
Cocktail sausages
Mini savoury bites
Fruit salad bowl
Pringles to dip
Pizza pinwheels

This is the sort of stuff I do for a (what we call) picnic dinner☺️

Oh and vol-au-vents are always a winner!

Really? Posters getting their knickers in a twist about the term picky tea? Good grief! Is charcuterie board more acceptable?

Here’s my offering of a PICKY TEA:
Pork pie
Nice ham
Boiled eggs
Crunchy cheddar
Pickled onions
Sundried tomatoes
Part baked rolls

Yum!

I commented about it because I found it funny - the day before, there was a thread about ‘most annoying’ phrases and so many people said they hated picky bits/picky tea

So I really thought this thread was a wind up at first 😂

These are buffets aren't they, I thought picky tea was something else.

A buffet? Who are these people? Hyacinth Bucket?????

Gymnopedie · 03/07/2024 18:54

In this house it's either a bits tea or a Christmas Night tea, because before it became more widespread it was what my grandmother always did around 8.00pm on...Christmas Night. Not exactly the same as hers but ours -

Cheese and grapes (my favourite)
Cold sausages (DP's)
Hard boiled egg
Crudites
Cherry tomatoes
Dips and/or houmous
Lidl knock off Pringles
Silverskin onions
Little gherkins/cornichons
Chicken legs
Olives
Have been known to add salted peanuts or Bombay mix.

Grandmother did sausage rolls and vol au vents but as I'm coeliac and the gf ones are vile we don't bother.

This thread is an education. I'd heard of picky tea and it isn't a phrase I use but I can't get worked up about it. But I always assumed that everyone was referring to finger foods. But lots of these examples have things like coleslaw and cous cous salad which most definitely require a fork. You knew!

Celery in a jug
Winkles
Bread and butter
Jam

Can you tell I'm a bit cockney? 😁

Celery in a bucket... devils vegetable.

We don’t use the term Picky tea, we always say buffet, but because we’re common we pronounce in buh-fee.

Always do at least one at Christmas and love an excuse to do one as a celebration. We’re doing one on Saturday, just me and DH for the football.
