Hair appointments on Instagram

This is not an AIBU because I know I am unreasonable for having poor boundaries. I am just complaining.

A few months ago my lovely hairdresser of many years took leave. I went to a new salon and the very nice hairdresser did a great cut but the highlights faded quickly
and badly. I went for a second appointment to give her another chance. She asked if she could record it. I should have said no. I said yes because I am a marshmallow. The reel was posted with my face, name, and a humiliating before clip with the awful colour and hair she brushed out!

The colour fades again, I went to another new salon. Out comes the camera. I said “no face”. Again, there I am on instagram with my sad “before” hair (but just the back of my head)

When did this become normal? Why do hairdressers think we want before shots in the public domain. I feel I need professional
make up before getting my hair done.

and to repeat, I know this is my fault for not having better boundaries. I always feel a bit insecure and nervous with new hairdressers.

My hairdresser - small town, rural Scotland, - posts some of her before and afters on instagram but the clients are not identified unless they want to be (a lot of the younger more glamorous ones are fine with it), I think its normal now and very helpful if you’re looking for a new hairdresser to see their work without having to ask.

She does my hair beautifully but has never asked for photos of mine (I’d say no anyway). I’m clearly not the kind of client she thinks would be a good advertisement for her salon!

Oh blimey yet another horror to have to negotiate.
What is this total obsession with posting everything on social media?

Omg, I've never had a hairdresser get a camera out on me. If they did, then I would at least expect to be paid for my modelling work!

What a fucking Liberty.

It can be hard to say no in the moment, but definitely next time be assertive and firm. My own hairdresser often does before and after pics but she isn’t pushy and she’s brilliant at taking them with no face or anything identifiable so I don’t mind if she asks, anyone else I would say no though.

I've never been photographed at the hairdresser but if they asked me I'd just say no. If you don't want to be used as part of their marketing, fair enough but you need to not be a wet lettuce and tell them so.

Promoting their business, in this case. Which is fair enough because I respect people working hard to make a living, but it shouldn’t be an expectation or pressure on clients.

Well yes but hairdressers have managed perfectly well without doing this for goodness knows how long.

Personally it would put me off going to a hairdressers where they are busy filming customers. As pp mentioned why aren't they using models?

My advice is beware the curly hairdressers on instagram. They tell you to come with no product or styling, brush your hair, take a photo and then act like curly hair wizards
after it is styled.

The humiliation of seeing oneself with brushed out, pre-coloured hair wearing a black robe and in unflattering light is only enhanced by the knowledge that it is my own fault for acting like a lettuce.

Edited

That sounds like a total nightmare to me.
I'd be really annoyed if I went to the hairdressers and got treated like that.
Promoting your business is one thing. But if it's at the expense of making your customers feel humiliated and uncomfortable that's a totally different thing.
Sounds like them trying to be " clever" without any consideration of their customers.
