Gigantic water bottles

Prompted by a sign at the train station telling people to always carry a bottle of water with them in hot weather.

I'm rubbish at drinking water, I find it very boring but I try to drink a bottle (500ml, or very occasionally - if its hot, 750ml) a day, mainly to stop me drinking other unhealthy drinks, and in the hope it is doing some good. The only noticeable difference is that I need to wee more often. I don't always have a bottle of water with me on the train though.

My teens are much better than me at drinking water. Dd often takes a small chilly bottle (I think its 250ml) if she goes out. DS drinks water at home or with meals but would only take a water bottle out if he was doing sport.

But I've noticed people with gigantic - like 2 litre - water bottles, sometimes a parent carrying multiple ones for children. My (adult) nephew had one with him the other day at a family BBQ.

But what started it? When I was a kid I never had a water bottle when I was out. (And we didnt really have it at meals ) Then sometime between then and now bottled water became a thing, now I think more people have reusable, much larger, water bottles.

As long as no one is forcing me to drink more water (or asking me to lug around their 2l bottle) then I've got no problem with it, but I'm curious how or why the amount of water we need to drink seems to have increased. (In other ways people are less healthy than in the 80s, but I'm sure "we" drink way more water...?)

I can remember having a water bottle for school back in the 80’s but I did have a lot of kidney infections as a kid so possibly I was unusual , jugs of squash and water available at lunch too

I need to take in 4l a day nowadays to help my kidney function so have various large bottles including a Stanley

I'd say for some people those opaque bottles contain more than water, and the see through bottles have gin and vodka. No wonder they are everywhere now!

FWIW I only drink water when I'm thirsty or in a hot country and I stop when refreshed.

Its an observation and curiosity why they seem to have got bigger. Water bottles have been around for ages but recently they seem to be enormous. Have we evolved to need more water than previous generations, or are we better educated or more aware that we need to drink water?

As long as no one is asking me to carry their enormous water bottle or drink 4l of water myself I don't have a problem with it but I can still be intrigued how or why water bottles have become so ginormous! And why you'd want to carry that much in one go? I imagine most people have access to drinking water, it would surely be less cumbersome to carry a smaller bottle and refill it (Or why we need reminders from the train company to say we should have a bottle of water - admittedly they don't indicate what size)

Its from instagram idiots, and companies trying to justify the ridiculous prices.

But you SHOULD drink as much water as you can. You can tell when you've been drinking more water, you glow. Water is used in almost every process in the human body. Dehydration will age you fast. So it's up to you but I'd say they're on to something

But is this something to boast about? Doctors will tell you quite rightly that you should drink BEFORE you're thirsty, thirst is actually quite a late sign that you're running low on water

Why not.

Better than my 90s childhood when we were chugging down Sunny D by the gallon 😄

JackieGoodman · 03/07/2024 12:23

Totally, and adults sipping/sucking constantly on their water bottles (even in meetings) like toddlers Hmm Grin
Have a drink, then put it to the side.

I have a giant 2.2L one that I picked up from Lidl last week. I bought it really to annoy my husband because they think they are stupid 😀I told him I was starting my basic bitch era haha

Fizbosshoes · 03/07/2024 12:38

One article I saw said to calculate how much water you need, multiply your weight in kilos by 0.03 to get the amount of litres you ideally should drink.
By that calculation I'm not doing as bad as the recommended amount was less than 1.5l which feels like a manageable amount to aim for.

TBF, until the 80s/90s school water fountains were widely available. They were all ripped out.

Historically, public water fountains were widespread.

There was a lull of a decade or two where free water stopped being available. Then came bottled water. Then came personal reusable bottles.

I loved the taste of the school water fountain and the water was always ice cold. On hot days there would be a fountain monitors with someone counting up to 20 elephants before you let someone else have a turn 😄

My kids still have water fountains in their school but not to drink from directly - more to fill up your water bottle. More hygienic.

As an aside I drink a small glass of water on a good day 😄. I have no idea where people put all that liquid. When on holiday in a seriously hot place we get through loads of water.

Nah, I am a good observer of normal things. If my pee is clear I'm well hydrated, if it's not I need to drink something. It's always clear though.

Our mums and grannies just drank tea. That's what I do most of the time also, because well, it's what we do! Water is for when I'm hot and thirsty. I'm still here at 66 despite ignoring all the hype, and not a bother on me either thankfully and touch wood.....

Confused

I mean admit that judging by the size of some of the water bottles I've seen some people carrying,I think they think that they're going to be crossing the Sahara desert rather than just taking a trip to the shops!

Six litres of water A DAY?

Obviously I'm not arguing with medical professionals, but I thought that level of consumption was considered dangerous and bad for your kidneys?

It won't be bad for kidneys but it's definitely risking seizures from too low salt levels which ive seen many a time working in icu

Having 15y in medicine I can't work out what it could be, and pretty certain whatever was told is being incorrectly interpreted entirely

Destiny123 · 26/08/2024 07:28

I've got a 1l bottle now, annoys the heck out of me lugging it on a 1.5h train to work but got sick to death of having the worst dehydration headache ever by the end of a 13h shift as not had time to drink anything beyond half the small cup of tea I made before starting work at 6.30am. Least now I can glug some between patients being dropped to recovery and the next one being dropped off
