White noise device for adults

The last couple of weeks I’ve been sleeping with a window open and unexpectedly I’ve slept really well - I can hear the traffic from the main road, which is quite far away, but echos up the mountain to where my house is, I’m usually a terribly light sleeper, disturbed by the tiniest noise.

It’s also drowned out the noise of my DPs heavy breathing / snoring which often keeps me awake.

last night I had to close the window as it was too windy and the bedroom door kept blowing open, I ended up being kept awake by DPs heavy breathing.

So after years of bad sleep, is background noise the answer?
I’m looking for recommendations of background / white noise device for adults as it’s not possible to always have the window open at night.

Would it work to play a white noise playlist on your phone through earbuds. Or one of those headbands that has earphones attached?

OMGsamesame · 02/07/2024 09:06

(Or play on speaker and wear earbuds yourself?)

A fan blowing makes the same white noise as a white noise machine.

I have a marpac dohm. They are a bit pricy, but it’s a natural fan noise, and it’s lasted around 5 years now. We had a cheaper one before that played a recording but once my brain heard where it cut back to the beginning it was annoying.

I use this one & love it. I go between the ocean & rain. I've had mine for years & bought one last year as a present

I think there are plenty on Amazon. We bought one for DD2 when she was a baby but it wasn't a child-specific one, it just played white noise (and lots of other sounds like rainfall, ocean etc).

Didn't bloody help her sleep though 😒

afaloren · 02/07/2024 09:15

We just have a fan. Have used it for years. It’s one of those tall ones rather than a round one. Started using it when we lived in a noisy place in a city and can’t sleep without it now!

TallulahBetty · 02/07/2024 09:27

White noise on YouTube, bluetoothed to a sleep headband.

ButtSurgery · 02/07/2024 09:27

I use an Alexa.

DreadPirateRobots · 02/07/2024 09:28

I have a Google Home and just tell it to play white noise.

GrumpyPanda · 02/07/2024 09:42

Or just get a wedge for the door so it can't blow open?

anotherHappymonday · 02/07/2024 10:20

Thank you for the recommendations. I’ve had a browse on Amazon, I’m interested to hear if anyone has a specific one that they recommend. I can’t wedge the door closed as my DD often comes into my bed during the night, also I’m looking for a solution that’ll see me through winter when it’s baltic outside and window closed.

The band sounds like a good idea and Bluetoothing to phone, I might try that first.

I use my phone. I have a subscription to Calm (I get it massively discounted around Black Friday) for their meditations, etc but there is also a decent selection of sleep sounds.

I personally use the thunderstorm sleep sound every night.

x2boys · 02/07/2024 14:09

I have a rain app on my phone ,you can get waves ,nature sounds etc ,really helps me to sleep well.

AllTheOtherCats · 02/07/2024 14:19

Hi OP, I can really recommend this one. It's on offer on Amazon at the moment too. Loads of different sounds to choose from and time settings. I have mine on all night due to screaming from kid next door which was driving me insane through lack of sleep and it blocks it all out.

There are LOADS of videos on YouTube from weather/traffic sounds to waves or even bedtime stories for adults. I play mine on an old tablet by my bed and usually use a 2 hour one because my problem is getting to sleep, but they have them for all lengths of time eg 10 hours.

TigerRag · 02/07/2024 14:25

You can get a snoozeband if you were concerned about disturbing DH

(I've not got one. But they do look good)

I do have a Hatch. But I'm sure you can get decent ones for a bit less.

toppcatt · 02/07/2024 14:31

I have a Marpac one but it is very old and probably not made any more. I recommend the brand though as some aren’t loud enough. I tend to use an app on my phone these days.

bookishblondie · 02/07/2024 14:32

A friend of mine uses loop earplugs

stressedespresso · 02/07/2024 14:33

I play pink noise (I find it less harsh than white) via Spotify through my AirPods at night. Absolute bliss! It blocks out just about anything and I always sleep amazingly with it on

FlimFlambros · 02/07/2024 14:36

I play a brown noise playlist through headphones from Spotify. I prefer it to white noise as it's bassier in sound.

TallulahBetty · 02/07/2024 14:51

I use this every night. Brilliant.
