Dulcolax

Posting here for traffic. Anyone who has taken Duloclax, how long does it take to work, and then get out of your system? Am wondering about taking it in the morning rather than at night, thinking it might kick in by teatime and hopefully wear off by bedtime. Is this a workable plan? Thanks!

I take it sometimes. I take it before bed though, then it works in the morning and that's it. I take one tablet and only need to go to the loo once. It really clears you out.

Viewfrommyhouse · 01/07/2024 22:48

I take it at night, but only if I know I can stay home the next day. It all kicks off in the morning as soon as, and then every time I eat or drink something, and it'll carry on like that all day....

Redglitter · 01/07/2024 23:02

I'd only take it in the morning if I was having a day at home. I wouldn't take any before going to work for instance

Try a different laxative unless you want the night/day from hell. Awful stuff! Hellish cramps and nausea. Never felt anything like it - genuinely thought I was going to pass out. DD had the same experience with it.

Dulcoease is so much better - works gently and with no nasty side effects or urgency so you can safely go to work etc after taking it.

Gingerlygreen · 01/07/2024 23:05

I take it before bed then get dreadful stomach cramps from about 5pm and it works not long after, it usually gives me diarrhoea so I only use it as a last resort.

Footiefever · 01/07/2024 23:07

Oh gosh, okay maybe better take it tonight as can work being home tomorrow. Am just wary as have read of it kicking in at 4am or a similarly ridiculous hour for someone.

It always seems to kick in around that time no matter what - prepare yourself for a long night/morning OP..

Oh hang on, more replies while I’ve been typing - thank you! Have done a few days of Dulcoease and they have done nothing so think I need something heavier. This is all I have - and I keep reading some awful experiences!

Don’t know what to do now. I think I must be totally bunged up so maybe just need to get on with it. Eeek.

@Sunshineandrainbow, no haven’t tried Senna. Have worked up and done two days of 5 Dulcoease. I do have Fybogel, would that do? Will read that thread now.

Lactulose. I take it in the morning and by mid afternoon I'm done. I have Diverticulitis which means I need to flush everything out as fast as I can to stop the pain.

Dulcolax and Dulcoease take too long.

Yuckyyuckyuckity · 01/07/2024 23:34

With Fybogel you need to drink lots and lots of water, and it usually takes a couple of days to work.

If you aren't used to Dulcolax don't take it in the day, the cramps are horrible and for some reason it doesn't work as well anyway. But you probably will be woken in the early hours if you take it the night before.

I used to buy teabags from Holland and Barrett called Slimatee which were very good and not as strong as Dulcolax but better than the likes of Fybogel/lactulose etc.

Footiefever · 01/07/2024 23:42

Oh my Lord, okay I’m not taking it having read the thread @Sunshineandrainbow linked - although it has had me spluttering my tea. Going to see if there’s any Senna in the med cupboard, DS might have had some a while back. If not, Fybogel in the morning. Thanks all!

I find the buscopan helps with the pain when I have had to take dulcolax.
I take the dulcolax early evening and then the buscopan at bedtime, so I don’t get the full effect of the cramps.

I wouldn’t worry about that. It just makes you want ‘to go’. You still have time to make a decision and take the time you need to get to the toilet. It seems to take about 15 hours to work for me, but I’m guessing the time varies a bit.
