Kindle, kindle paper white or kindle fire?

I'm away on a holiday that will
Include a lot of travelling and I don't have much room in my luggage for books. I had a kindle years ago and decided to look for a new one and I'm baffled. Lots of choice and a huge variety in price. I don't have a huge budget and mainly just want it to read. Although having the fire might be good for internet access to watch movies etc. I'd love to hear some opinions please (and yes I love books the best but I simply can't carry them).

I love my paperwhite!

Me too. I must have had it for 10 years now, have God knows how many books on it, inc. complete works of some classic authors, and it still charges up very quickly.

Was always a quick reader and esp. since retiring I can easily get through an average length book a day, so I buy a lot of the Amazon 99p jobs.

Is still miss my basic original Kindle, I have a paper white now but I do t like the touch screen on it. I often just use the Kindle app on my phone.

I have an old paper white. I love it. You can read it in the sun or in the dark. Just change light for where you are. I found I couldn’t read in the sun with my iPad but can with my paper white kindle.

The basic Kindle is absolutely great. I have one that I bought about 3 years ago, it's wonderful.

Personally I think the Paperwhite is a bit of a rip off - you won't notice the slight difference in resolution and unless you're planning on dropping your Kindle in the bath, it's pretty pointless. And the light on the normal Kindle is perfectly good and adjustable.

Considering Paperwhite is almost double the price it's just not worth it at all.

I also have a Kindle Fire but I never use it - it's a bit of a weird hybrid - there are much better tablets out there and also much better e-readers.

So yes - basic Kindle all the way!

I agree with this, my original kindle has been going for 5 years now and works perfectly. I upgraded to a paperwhite, and I didn't feel it was worth the difference in price.

If you have time to wait a couple of weeks, prime day is coming up and they always get reduced

FortunataTagnips · 02/07/2024 10:10

Paperwhite every time. The Fire is shit.
Be aware, though, that contrary to what a PP said upthread, you can’t read library books on it in the UK. If you’re mostly planning to borrow from the library, get a Kobo. I have a Kobo Clara for this.

I had a kindle paperwhite and my mum got me a new one for my birthday. It's much lighter than my old one. But I love just taking that with me.

I agree with all of this - but the basic Kindle does it all for around half the price of the Paperwhite. Paperwhite really doesn't bring much else to the table.

Kindle have changed in specification since I had a basic Kindle. They weren't backlit back then. My paperwhite is over 10 years old, and I didn't know that basic Kindles are backlit now.

In any case, I agree that a Kindle Fire isn't really worth the money. They are slow, and when you disable spellcheck it still annoyingly autocorrects.

DD bought one for lectures and said it was useless as it didn't recognise any of the scientific words she was using and kept correcting them.

TheNoonBell · 02/07/2024 11:02

I love my paperwhite. The battery life these days is not as good as they used to be but still pretty good so I get a week or so per charge.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 02/07/2024 11:11

A kindle fire is basically just a tablet, you can use the same apps on a tablet or phone.

The advantage of an e-reader is the screen that can still be read in bright sun.

I would recommend a kobo over a kindle as you aren't restricted to buying books from Amazon and can use the library, Google books and other sources.

PlantsAndSpaniels · 02/07/2024 11:23

If you read often, I wouldn't go fire. My mum has one and she struggles with the weight of it compared to my paperwhite. Also, not great for reading in sunlight and battery won't last as long so won't be great for travelling.

I have seen loads of people saying the kids kindle is the same model, but cheaper, with case, 2 year guarantee and a years subscription to kids books.

RampantIvy · 02/07/2024 12:41

People often seem to think the basic Kindle isn't as good so they buy the Paperwhite

It's probably because the older kindles weren't backlit and those of us who had an early version of the basic kindle didn't know that they are now.

beguilingeyes · 02/07/2024 12:51

It's definitely worth having a look at eBay. People upgrade and sell their old ones for peanuts.
I'm quite partial to the now discontinued Kindle Voyage. It's a bit smaller and fits my hand better. I've pick up a couple of those on eBay for about £30.
Ofter a second hand one will include a case also, and they can be pretty spendy to buy separately.

Thanks so much for the follow up comments. Unfortunately I purchased the paper white last night before all the additional comments! Still, I'm looking forward to receiving it!

Honestly, I find the larger reading area and the warm light really beneficial. Especially as I read a lot in bed. Even with the price difference I would always opt for the paper white. The paperwhite is also water resistant and has more LED’s to adjust the brightness. The storage is less on the PW but you will struggle to fill it unless you’re reading comics or using it for audible books. I just removed ‘read’ books from the device.

Moier · 02/07/2024 23:42

Paper white..
You don't need to have light on to read.
I'm onto my 4th kindle and it's the best I've had.
Hated the fire.. always problems with it.

beguilingeyes · 03/07/2024 06:59

I have a Fire. Theoretically so I can watch Netflix in bed. It lives in a drawer.
E-ink all the way for reading.
