Sofa bed for every day bed?

DS (16 and over 6ft tall) needs a new bed. He has the box room (I'm not the box room troll) so space is minimal and a double bed wouldn't fit due to door location and would leave no room for anything else.

The only option is another ikea European length single bed, or as he seems to think will work, a sofa bed. It would have to be one that you didn't need to pull away from the wall, a fold out one with the same height, not one on the floor when it's folded out. He'd have to fold it again if he needed to go to toilet in the night.

Anyone's teen have a sofa bed as their bed?

I can't find any that look suitable for anything other than short term overnight guests.

I had an Ikea single sofa bed when I lived in a tiny studio for 6 months as a student. It was manageable, but I was very glad when I moved and could have a proper bed. It really doesn't sound sustainable if he has to fold it to get out of the room though. it sounds ridiculous. What would happen if...
he had to get out in an emergency?
he broke his foot/arm?

If blocking the door is really the only solution, could you re-mount the door so it opens out of the room?

What ar the room dimensions, would a small double fit?

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 01/07/2024 15:58

There's a box room troll?!

There's a box room troll?!

Back in ye olden days there was.

The fire risk is a big concern for me. Remounting the door wouldn't work as he has a built in cupboard right next to the door.

If there really is no other way, at all, of him having somewhere else to sleep, then I would use an unsprung mattress on the floor.

Either a flimsy foam one, or a more solid futon. Then he can peel up a corner when he needs to go to the loo, and in the day it can be actually rolled up, Japanese style. Be aware the futon will be hefty and would probably hinder the door being opened from outside in the event of a fire.

I did this for a few years. It's not the lap of luxury, but it will sort out any back problems he has!

I wouldn’t have anyone in my household effectively barricading themselves into a box room at night. From a fire perspective, a “making it to the bathroom if going to be sick” perspective and a general “putting it up and down multiple times a day is too much faff” perspective there’s no way I’d allow it.

A European single sounds perfectly reasonable, or a small double if it will fit.

PerkingFaintly · 01/07/2024 16:43

But if you're saying the Ikea European length single will fit both room and son, then that sounds a much better option.

Agree with PP that putting a bed up and down several times a day isn't going to happen, even before considering the fire risk.

Thank you all. I didn't even think of a small double. Think that's the way to go, and the door will be able to open and close. Just need to rejig his layout and it'll work.

I wouldn't, they're not designed for every night sleeping, he might get a bad back.
How about a single with storage underneath instead?

Gerwurtztraminer · 01/07/2024 18:19

Have you looked at wall mounted beds/Murphy beds? A but more expensive but worth considering as very easy to put up and down and can have a built in desk underneath that folds away as it comes down. Can get them in small double size.
