Help with my teen’s bed/storage/desk?

Good morning everyone. My son is year 10, obviously going into year 11 very soon, and has a small room. I want to get a desk in there so I’m thinking the obvious option is to raise the bed to a high sleeper and put a desk underneath.

Problem is this will mean the ladder will use up space where he currently has a 3-drawer chest and he’ll lose the under-bed storage he currently has.

I’ve looked at expensive cabin bed things online but they all seem more suited to the size and storage needs of an 8 year old rather than a 15-20 year old.

Am I missing something?

I’ve tried thinking outside the box and setting him up a study area downstairs but with 2 other children, it won’t be ideal for concentrating. Or there’s the library… 🤔

Any ideas for desk-clothes-bed?

Thank you ❤️! That's really kind of you to say. The boards are not scaffolding, it's thinner than that and less expensive. I bought them from B&Q, mostly used the raw finished stuff. Sanded and stained. It's not a fine finish, a bit wonky and imperfect. It's an old cottage, so we call all the wonky bits character. 😂

Hey op, following as I have a similar predicament with dd 13, she has a tiny box room and wants a desk in there now. I agree cabin and loft beds are fine up to a certain age, but if your ds is 15-16 and you want something that will last at least a few years he's probably already past that stage already. Most I've seen have weight limits too so always assumed they were for younger kids.

Dd rejected the idea of a pull out / pull down desk, she wants a proper one sat there plus a chair, so the hunt is on for something small and slim but big enough for her to do homework and her arty / creative projects. Ikea have a few and some already mentioned by pp are ones we've been looking at. She'd like a bookshelf type storage unit, plus shelves on the wall, so planning to use wall space for as much shelf storage as possible.

We can't fit a chest of drawers in there as well, but luckily she has a cupboard that's built over the stairs that is very deep, so that's used as a wardrobe. Only a standard single bed will fit in her room, much to dd's annoyance as apparently all her friends have double beds now! We've got an under bed storage drawer on wheels that pulls out for a bit of extra storage.

Anyway I'll be following with interest as could really do with some ideas and inspiration myself 🙂

@lightningstrikes and wow what you've built for your son is fantastic! I wish I had such skills, you're very clever to not only come up with the solution but then to build it yourself too! 👏🏼

@Lakeyloo another great idea. Only problem is where would his clothes go, as that’s where his chest of drawers is, and he needs more clothes storage not less, if anything.
