Holiday swollen ankles.

In the last few years every time we go on holiday my feet and ankles swell.
I put it down to the heat. They went down within a couple of days.
3 weeks ago we went to the North East lots of walking.

We came home and my feet are so swollen and the ankles are massive.
My usual size is a 4, I ended up buying some new sandals size 6.
They are only just going down.

Anyone have any advice on stopping this happening or should I see my GP.

How old are you and are you on any medication?

Whatmonth · 30/06/2024 10:41

64 and yes I'm on BP/cholesterol and a cancer tablet.

It’s age related water retention. My feet and ankles swell terribly in the heat, or if I’ve been walking, or even if I’ve been sat down travelling for hours. My plates look like the Queen Mother’s! Your gp might give you diuretics.

I'm 66 and happens to me.
I'm on holiday at moment in the Canaries.
Get your circulation checked.
If not that.. just be age and medication.
Mines both those things ... age/ medication. ( plus heat)
Try and get your legs up as often as possible.

I have a similar problem following knee surgery on my right leg where the foot, ankle snd lower calf are all considerably swollen and puffy compared to the left.
I'm doing lots of lower leg flexes and extensions plus applying cooling gel and cream a couple of times a day.
I think it's working a little but I'm also wondering whether to see the GP and ask for diuretic tablets.

My ankles started swelling when I started taking statins, the nurse advised me to put me feet up when sitting, and to take my statin am rather than pm. It's helped, but they still swell a bit.

Do you have varicose veins? They were the cause of my feet and ankles swelling in hot weather.

Since I had them done, that’s all gone away.

If you're on Amlodipine, they can cause ankle swelling. You could ask the GP to review your antihypertensives.

@3beesinmybonnet
Statins should be taken at night when your body makes more cholesterol .

Age plays a big part in this.
I’m late 50s and on BP tablets and the last few years my ankles have started swelling in the hot weather if I’m on my feet a lot or going for a walk. I lie on my bed and put my feet up on the headboard, I swear I can feel them draining.
Some blood pressure tablets work by dilating the blood vessels which can make them “leaky” and cause your ankles to become swollen, you could ask your doctor to try another brand of tablet which works in a different way.
Certainly worth a trip to the doctor to get advice.

@Moier
Thanks, I'll have a look into it.

I didn't know that?!

Amlopidine by any chance?
Get your legs up at the end of the day - sofa with bean bag on.
get your practice nurse to fit you with a compression stocking to wear when you are going to be on your feet a lot.
calf exercises where you go up on top toes to increase venous return

Regarding the statins, one type is better taken at night another in the morning.
Also evidence is coming in that people react individually to them and what works for one may not work for another. (Just bits I’ve picked up from pharmacist)

olympicsrock · 30/06/2024 16:17

No - the reasons that doctors recommend that statins are better taken at night is that if people experience muscular pain/ cramps there are less troubled at night.
You are correct that different people tolerate different statins.
They do not cause ankle swelling though…
