What do young men who work for financial consultancies wear in summer?

DS has a summer internship with a well known consultancy firm in their London head office. He will turn up in a suit on day 1 but is hoping it'll be jackets and ties off after that. Is that likely to be the case?

Also, he only has 2 suits - black and navy - which aren't summery. Are the men likely to be in lighter colours?

He was wondering about getting a linen suit but, in my experience, they always look more casual and creased.

Navy or fawn chinos and a dress shirt. Suit in the office with a tie in the pocket but it probably won’t be used. Some may be more casual but I’d say the Intern needs go with the majority.

My DH works in a big London financial consultancy and wears exactly what the above poster said. Chinos and a nice shirt. He hasn’t worn a tie for years except for client meetings (not even sure he wears one for those!)

Also, yes he will be a bit sweaty on the tube, but in an air conditioned office all day he won’t be too warm. I would say definitely no to a linen suit.

I had to speak to a group of interns on Monday - this was 10am on day one of a ten week placement. The males were all wearing shirt, tie and suit type trousers, no jackets evident. Most of the shirts were pale blue (noticed because a few years ago they'd all have been white).

My son has just started his consultancy internship. He's been wearing smart shirts and chinos which is the right approach as an intern but some of the permanent employees wear jeans, T-shirts and trainers apparently.

He hasn't seen anyone wearing a suit although that might be needed for client meetings.

This but always with socks in our place. Don't wear a light linen suit unless he wants to be called miami vice or the man from delmonte.

This is exactly what ds wore last summer.

In my office, half the men were in shorts this week. It tends to be either jeans and t shirts, or suits for client meetings, very rarely anything in between and definitely no linen suits. I'm sure he'll find it's pretty casual.

Youdontevengohere · 29/06/2024 20:35

I work in this environment, men mostly in chinos and a shirt. Jackets and ties very rare nowadays.

LeopardsRockingham · 29/06/2024 23:44

Dh not in London, but often goes for meetings, wears chinos - navy, khaki, burgundy, stone and a smart shirt. Good brogues

Before covid he may have worn suit type trousers and perhaps over 10 years ago a suit for client meetings, but even clients only get chinos and shirts now.

Bemusedandconfusedagain · 30/06/2024 00:09

Chinos and a shirt. But it will not count against him to wear a proper suit and tie. No one ever judged an intern for being too smart. No linen suits.

Good shoes is an important but often overlooked detail in the early years of acquiring a wardrobe. Investing in the right shoes and keeping them good by polishing is an overlooked skill.

Good shoes elevate any outfit and are a sign of 'knowing what's important'. A good message for anyone esp an intern, as well as all the usual working hard
