Apologies for foot photo!
So this is the start of a bunion 😑
Apart from not wearing flip flops anymore, how can I stop it in its wonky tracks??

I have, and have always had horrible feet. My mum asked the doctor about my "bunions" when I was about 11, and he said the shape of my feet was probably hereditary. Squeezing my feet into unsuitable shoes as I grew up and later did not help matters. But when I was rising 50, I took up yoga. My feet are definitely stronger and my right big toe in particular seems to have straightened out. Apart from being ugly and a bit hard to find nice shoes to fit, I've never had any real problems with them, especially not pain, so I've learned to live with them. So far, aged 69, I don't have arthritis. Or if I do, I don't know about it.
I knew someone who had dreadful bunions, but they didn't hurt, just looked bad. Aged about 35, she had surgery on one, and was proposing to have the other done later. But she got necrosis of the bone, so she never really recovered from the op, and vowed she would leave the other one alone. Whilst that is a very rare complication, I'd think definitely twice about surgery unless you're in pain.

Yes, there are risks with the surgery.

I was only offered the op because I'd reached the stage that I could barely walk. I've been trying to remember my exact age, but only know for certain that I was in my 50s - at least 52, but no older than 54.

I was hobbling by the time I got the op. In order to avoid two spells off work and two spells of respite care for my mum I opted to have both done together.

Barefoot shoes have straightened out my feet massively, and I've developed stronger arches.

To anyone considering bunion surgery I would say really do consider seeing a podiatrist first.
I had surgery on one foot for my bunion. Then a bunion started to form on my other foot. Trying to avoid surgery again I saw a podiatrist who made me an insole to alter my gait in that foot and the pain was cured by it. My bunion hasn't worsened since.
My operated foot gives me more pain and is much less flexible than my unoperated foot. I found that the NHS contract out bunion treatment to private companies who, of course, want to operate to make money.

You might be able to avoid surgery (and all the pain and three month's recovery) with a podiatrists help.

Wow - so many stories!
What's the ideal indoor shoe, I wonder? I know being barefoot is bad for feet and can contribute to plantar fasciitis.
Sigh.

It may not be a bunion but hallux rigidus (given that your tow is still relatively aligned and there's a bump on top too). Firm soles with wide toe box (think walking boots)
