What do you appreciate as a end of school year gift?
I know everyone normally does bottles of wines, cakes etc... but what is a nice gift and what normally gets wasted?
I got a big box of biscuits ast year thinking they can be eaten next term....
I don't have a lot to spend and have two children 🙈
Also my son wouldn't dream of writting a nice card, despite him loving his teacher! 🙈

Please no cards!
A note to the Head about what a great teacher I would be welcome though 😂

Littlefish · 29/06/2024 12:08

The school where I'm Governor suggests that parents buy a book or something for the classroom. All the teachers really appreciate this and spend time putting together a list of books etc that parents might like to buy, if they want to give a gift.

When I was a teacher, I always appreciated a note from the parents (I taught nursery and Reception so the children couldn't write it themselves).

Those 4 colour Bic pens in nice colours (they do gold/pink/silver), as nurses everyone has one and teachers use them too. Everyone loves a pen.

Agree with all the suggestions for nice small stationery items always being appreciated. My DD is in an SEN school and has so many different TAs and support staff in the room that I now do one big gift bag of assorted little things so they can all choose a small token gift from her that they like. Eg a pack of G&T or cocktail cans - some alcoholic some 0% - some cute pens and notepads, something pampering like mini hand creams or face masks, Chocolates, Doesn't need to be expensive but shows my appreciation for the incredible job they do for my child. And all consumable items not mugs etc. When it's been fewer people and I knew I wasn't going to miss anyone out, I did Costa vouchers. Even if they don't like hot drinks they can use it for cake and smoothie etc.

gerbo · 29/06/2024 15:31

I'm a teacher. Chocolates, sweeties/biscuits and wine are the classics and greatly enjoyed. Consumables. A verbal thank you is wonderful too from a parent. Class vouchers are always much appreciated also.

i never ever gift wine or booze

too much of a risk if they or someone they live with has an issue with alcohol

Sookafatwan · 29/06/2024 15:35

Another stupid import from America, nothing more than supercilious one upmanship.

A handwritten card saying the difference the teacher made to your dc, biscuits for staff room.

TizerorFizz · 29/06/2024 15:40

Lots of people in my life and that of dc have done a great job. DDs wrote a thank you letter. At one school there was a class collection. JL voucher purchased. Never gave as en individual parent. Book idea for class or library is a good one or give to pta.

Aww thank you all!
So it sounds like a nice home made card would be a good shout... and then maybe a big box of biscuits from M&S as they'll stay in date from September!
I like the stationary suggestion! She likes Star Wars so will see what's about 😅

I know theres 2 TAs and then another teacher does pe.... it gets a bit much wanting to buy for everyone but also don't want to leave anyone out as they're all amazing!

What about some Star Wars stickers or a stamp?

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 29/06/2024 21:29

£5 costa voucher

DisruptiveCumin · 01/07/2024 12:09

I second stationery and a handmade card / handwritten letter from the kid! Personalized academic calendars also go down well.
Absolutely don't do mugs, my friend is a teacher and she has a whole shelf of them, it's one of the most popular yet less useful gifts.

Maireas · 01/07/2024 12:11

A card with a lovely message is always welcome and so thoughtful.
Don't worry about a gift. However, if you want to, biscuits or chocolate are fine because they can always be shared.
I'm teetotal so I've given away the many bottles of wine I've been given!
