Someone scraped my car and I don't know what to do

Looking for some advice please.

We have typical city on street parking on a narrow road. Woke up this morning to find someone has made a proper mess of the side of our car and driven off.

Have now discovered that a neighbour's car (a few houses down, not next to ours) has also been damaged but they saw it happen, came out and got the details. Described their driving as very bad

No witnesses to the damage on our car, unfortunately, but the paint left on both ours and theirs is the same.

I've asked the neighbour to ask about ours when they make contact. Is there anything else I can/should do?

Send the details to your insurers.

purplecorkheart · 28/06/2024 11:34

Might be worth asking if any of the neighbours has a ring doorbell?

I would ask your neighbour to pass on the contact details of the driver to you and handle this yourself rather than put you neighbour in the position to ask about your card.

Nannydoodles · 28/06/2024 11:37

Get the details of the driver from your neighbour and phone your insurance company.

OddBoots · 28/06/2024 11:41

Get photos of your car and that of the neighbour if you can.

Suhbataar · 28/06/2024 11:53

Thanks all. No ring doorbells unfortunately.

Do I need to report to police if I contact the insurer? Is it likely to affect my no claims/future premiums?

I wasn't sure about passing on the details when I have no proof, just a strong suspicion.

I would report to the police. If they hit your car but didn’t leave their details, it’s a hit and run offence. Your insurance company should be able to test the paint against the other car and go after them so you don’t have to pay the excess.

Mairzydotes · 28/06/2024 12:10

Is it a possibility your neighbour scraped your car with theirs?

No they won't do that atall.

Report to the police and your insurer. Make a note of all the details and take photos of both cars damage. You need to supply as much evidence to your insurer as possible.
Unfortunately, your insurer will need to deal with the damage to your car (assuming you have Comprehensive cover) and they will claim from the third party. The coincidence is overwhelming so it will help.

Definitely not. Quite aside from them being a very nice person who wouldn't do that, it doesn't match the damage on ours at all.

Shame they won't take paint samples as I can't see any other way of proving it was them, but I guess that it is the insurer's choice.

Thanks @Karatema I shall do that.

Sadly it will cost you whatever you do.
If you make a claim on your insurance your premium will go up next year

StMarieforme · 28/06/2024 13:36

If you can't find the diver, or they are uninsured, you will be held at fault.

It's shot and cost me a fortune in 2019.

Talkingfrog · 03/07/2024 07:50

I agree with Karatema. As many pictures as you can, both close up, but also one further back showing both cars so it can be seen how they were positioned in relation to each other.

Regardless of whether you intend to claim or not, you still need to notify your insurer.

How is this possible ?

PandaChopChop · 03/07/2024 07:56

They won't take paint samples. The police won't/don't have time to investigate it either.

Someone drove into the back of me in 2020. Caused damage. I got several photos of them driving away and later found their parked car and got a photo of the damage.

Took three years to sort out, a trip to court, a follow up video call and an interrogation by a wanky barrister- all because I just wanted my excess back. And I had solid proof that it was them who caused the damage!!!!!

I'll honestly never claim again, it was awful going to court and have to convince a judge that I was telling the truth despite being faced with three liars. And I had bloody proof!

You could try one of those reflective yellow hi-viz attachments for the offside of your car to help avoid it happening again, next time your parked. A company in the UK called Sideguard, makes them (search: car door mirror protector). I got mine off Etsy or Ebay.
Hope you find out who did it.

Foodfrezy · 17/09/2024 06:00

Get the details from your Neighbour and send them off to your insurer which photos. Also see if your neighvours have any ring doorbell footage as proof!

What do you mean? Which bit of what @Talkingfrog posted isn't possible?
