Has anyone over 60 been successful in losing 2 stone?

I'm becoming so disheartened. I was quite slim up to having children in my 30s, but in the subsequent decades just gradually put on weight. I've turned 60 and decided to go for it and lose the 2 stone I need to get me back to 'me.' But I'm losing hope. I don't follow a specific diet because this is more about healthy eating, cutting calories and exercise. I know I'm eating less, I'm moving more but progress is so slow. I feel like I instantly get a lot heavier if I have even one day of not being careful

I'd appreciate any success stories from over 60s who've managed to lose a few stone since turning 60 and kept it off. Did you follow any particular regime? And how long did it take?

I was a few months short of my 61st birthday when my DH died. I inadvertently lost two stones in a month. Don't recommend it - I simply wasn't eating and lost muscle tone as well. I went down from 16st 4 to 14st 4. Once I started eating, quickly regained the lot.

For the first two years after DH died, I did nothing at all. (It happened during lockdown and to say that I was depressed is an understatement. I'd given up my full-time job at the age of 58, partly because of DH's health.)

I'm now 65. Long story short: am going to the gym at least 3 times a week and I've regained the muscle tone (such as it was). My current weight is 14st 12.5. I'm doing some cardio at the gym, some weight training on apparatus and some light free weights. Also a calorie deficit.

I aim to get down to 14st and then to take it from there. I'm 5ft 9 inches tall.

Mumsnet own low carb high fat way of eating (nicknamed bootcamp) has helped me to drop a third of my body weight from BMi ‘morbidly obese to ‘normal’ to say it has changed my life would be the understatement of the year.

edit to add I’m 65 this year. Transformed.

You have to go hard or go home unfortunately. Cut out all the shit food and exercise religiously. There are days when I feel like crying but for me it's better than being fat.

I've lost nearly 25kg over two years and that included breast cancer treatment so more difficult with steroids and the associated weight gain.

I have done , quit added sugar and do 16:8 eating , so skip breakfast and eat between midday and 8pm. Also doing a lot more exercise helps to be retired and having all the extra time.

I lost 6st in my 60s, mainly spurred on by fear. A diagnosis of diabetes came with advice to lose weight and increase exercise. It took me 18 months, and I have maintained my weight at 8st 9lb for two years. My blood sugar is now normal, and my cholesterol and blood pressure are also normal after years of being too high. Best of all, I feel really good. I have energy, look good in size 6 clothes, and sleep well.

I had to completely change my relationship with food. I went low carb, 16/8 fasting, and stuck to mainly salads of various kinds, mostly with cheese or fish, very little meat, and no UPFs. It’s easy now because I have come to enjoy fresh, crisp, uncomplicated food. I keep a food diary of everything I eat. Once I’d lost a couple of stone, I started going to the gym regularly, and again, once I got used to it, I found that I actually wanted to work out every couple of days. Now, if I go more than a day or two without a lot of exercise, I feel quite twitchy.

Most days I have overnight oats with yoghurt, seeds and berries for lunch or before I go to the gym, and then in the evening I have a big salad. You can eat almost any amount of green stuff without worrying about calories. Sometimes it’s spinach, avocado, carrot, pomegranate and feta with nuts and a lemon and tahini dressing. Other times, lettuce, tomato and cucumber with smoked salmon with a simple French dressing. Occasionally I’ll have a simple pasta dish or a vegetable curry, and if I get in late, it’s usually some kind of vegetable soup (butternut squash, mushroom or tomato) with a sourdough roll.

If injections had been a thing when I started, I might have been tempted, but they weren’t, so I had to work on my own attitude to food.

Yeah my mum and mil just for starters, no exercise just cutting calories. Basically did what they did when younger
