What clothes do secondary school age boys wear?

Ds starts secondary school in September, it's a sen school mainly semh/asd/adhd and no uniform, all the boys seemed mostly to be in tracksuits when we visited so I'm wondering what sort of clothes I should get him (he has no opinion on this he literally does not care so it's up to me to chose stuff for him basically)
ds doesn't care about clothes particularly he just wears whatever I buy him but I'm aware he might be a bit too old for the supermarket joggers and gamer t shirts that's been his standard for a long time what's the standard sort of clothes for that age? All the boys that age that I see about seem to be wearing identical things but I know how teenagers can be about the wrong brands etc

Can't really go wrong with Nike joggers and hoody. Both my boys (nearly 10 and 14) like the Nike miler t-shirts.

Meganmeccano · 27/06/2024 18:36

Jogging bottoms in grey (dark grey is better for stains) or black, long white sports socks, trainers, T-shirt, hoodie. Jeans if they're feeling super smart and even the odd polo shirt.

I'd get 2 or 3 outfits and then stock up again a few weeks into term when it gets colder and you have more of an idea of the place.

Sports wear, particularly those slippery football trousers and quarter zips. Anything Nike or North face goes down well.

Go to JD Sports avoid anything branded McKenzie and then you can't go far wrong.

shams05 · 27/06/2024 19:14

Cargo pants and t-shirts mainly with a hoodie or loose jacket. As they get older the cargo pants change to chinos and t-shirts to polo shirts and shirts.
My boys were never fussed about shoes so any trainers they find comfortable are fine.

And this is why its important to get some local info. My boys 14 and 17 have never worn cargo pants or chinos.

Well tbh both DS don't like jeans so were never really bothered about looking different than their friends.
Ds1 was just too skinny and still thinks joggers are too baggy so chinos are his favourite. DS2 always preferred cargo pants with lots of pockets.
Their friends were mostly in jeans.

Mine would not be seen dead in cargo pants or chinos! And the 13yr old and all of his friends are very bothered about shoes. It's Nike 95s or Nike TNs here.

dementedpixie · 27/06/2024 20:44

My ds would wear shorts and a plain unbranded tshirt if it was an option. He doesn't wear joggies or jeans or cargo trousers or chinos

LaPalmaLlama · 27/06/2024 20:44

Agree with pp that it v much depends on demographic. Cargos are quite popular here but have to be the skinny ones which frankly only look ok on v skinny boys. Chinos ( navy only) would be worn for semi formal events rather than just hanging out. I would do a drive by on the school with a long lens 🤣

dementedpixie · 27/06/2024 20:45

My ds is also unbothered about shoe brands and would wear plain black Adidas trainers from sports direct

Needmorelego · 27/06/2024 20:51

My daughter is at a sen secondary.
They mostly (the boys and the girls) wear trackies and hoodies from Primark and t-shirts of popular tv shows/characters/music bands etc.
They don't care about labels in the slightest.

Bolarpear · 27/06/2024 20:56

I don't think you could go wrong with Nike, Adidas or North Face. Only colours accepted by my DS are black/navy/grey. Plenty of white sports socks though. Vinted and mandmdirect are great for that age group

Bolarpear · 27/06/2024 20:57

My DS has worn a pair of chinos once, under duress, for a family occasion where skinny joggers or jeans were not an option. He's adamant that will never be repeated

DS12 is neurodivergent, as are many of his friends. They wear what they like and feel comfy in. Lots have sensory b Ed’s around clothes. One loves blue jeans and a check shirt, one wears classic ‘preppy’ style, one likes those shiny football trousers.
DS wears shorts (he loves baggies) or cargo pants and a soft cotton (preferably Dr Who) t-shirt. Quite partial to a brushed cotton checked over shirt.
I think his mates are a bit more tolerant of different clothing styles and preferences than many neurotypical kids.

How long ago was this 😄

QueenAstrid · 27/06/2024 21:09

None of the teenage boys around me wear cargos or chinos. My DS lives in tracksuits or t shirts and joggers in the brands already mentioned, and Nike Jordons.

shams05 · 27/06/2024 21:15

Well ds is 16, he's just finished his GCSEs! So I'm talking about now.
Is it strange they don't like jeans? Honestly I'm just grateful they don't have expensive tastes.
They love Matalan!

TokyoSushi · 27/06/2024 21:16

If your area is anything like ours, have a look in JD Sports and your answer will be right there!

My ds lives in matalan Jersey shorts and plain tshirts from asda/tesco/matalan

One of mine is an all black jeans and t shirt type, the other dresses entirely from Sports Direct. They both have sensory issues around comfort. Pile lined hoodies from Boden originally/latterly Superdry have been a hit, hoodies seem to be universal.
