Help with school attendance

If a parent is struggling to get their child into school and they have called a meeting. Is it to support the parent with getting their child into school.? If so what sort of support can a school sometimes offer?

Incase it matters the mum has bipolar. I think this may lead to not the best decision making? I'm not sure on that though.

Non driver . Quite far from school... can't change school. But I can't go into why as the question I'm asking will get lost .

So in general terms can schools put anything in place to help ?

Depending on distance and issues involved transport may be provided. Understandably you can’t go into wider issues but is there enough support in place in general for them? Maybe a CAF needs to be completed so the right support can be looked at overall

She should take somebody with her to the meeting.

What the school wants, is the child in school so their figures aren't affected. That will be their goal.

Or the child out of their school and into one the parents can get her too. Which will also stop the schools attendance being messed up.

And of course the best place for the child is at school, especially if she is having some instability at home.

Has the family got anyone else involved with them, such as a social worker?

Schools do sometimes get involved with getting a child to school. I've worked at a school where the head would go and collect the children every day but this was on foot.

They should consider making a referral to your local young carers service, if child is missing school due to mums illness.

Schools will have the meeting to find out what the home circumstances are and why the child isn't making it in to school.

They can refer to SS for early help if needed.
If the child is anxious about coming to school there are a whole load of EBSA strategies they can put into place.

What is CAF?

I have offered to take her child to school if she can get him to me otherwise I have to go back on myself. That's makes quite a difference when using public transport. So she would need to get a bus to me which takes 10 mins.

She is pretty hard to reason with she gets very defensive. She can be quite argumentative. Then spend days crying /stressed /annoyed. I think that's the bipolar side of her. But it makes it hard for the school as well.

Common assessment framework. It’s a way of assessing needs of the family and bringing everyone together.

It sounds like having someone at the meetings to support her could be useful.

They may be able to sort out taxis to transport the child. I used to work in a school and we did that for kids whose parents couldn't drive and were too far to walk

I will ask her if she wants me to go with her .

if she’s not able to get her child to school
