Giving away a bed - almost wished I'd just ditched it

Popped it on facebook for free and got a few requests.

Person one - cancelled at last moment as they didn't think it would look nice where they wanted to put it...Confused

Person two to be fair said that she'd thought about it sorry to trouble me and she'd decided to get a double

Person 3 meant to be collecting in half an hour has just messaged to ask if it will go in his car - I responded that I don't know it's standard single bed size and now he's said it's a red vauxhall what do you think....

I know f*ck all about cars - don't even drive but have a vague idea there's more than one sort of vauxhall and I'm dan if I ow what being red has to do wth it....

when my dad died i cleared some bits of that site was loosing the will to live, it was free collection only they would come in small car saying can i deliver, or no show for 10 people, not worth the hassel in the end

I’d leave it outside. Everything goes, very quickly. Our record is a baby swing that went in 5 minutes. They even knocked and asked if it was okay to take it!

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 27/06/2024 10:15

I listed my kitchen cabinets on FB. I seriously underpriced them so got too many responses. I'm wading my way through them, politely answering their (already answered in the listing) questions.
Bloke asks at 10.05 "is this still available?"
Because I don't answer immediately, at 10.20 he messages "????"
Blocked

The chazza shops that collect round here are really picky. I once rang about our sofa and three guys arrived, sat on it, bounced about a bit and declared it looked immaculate but was too saggy!
It was perfectly fine, we were only selling as we'd moved and it was too small. I put it on marketplace and the guy who collected it was delighted.

I had this last week clearing my dads house they took everything we weren’t sure they’d take and left the 3 matching pieces as said it was shabby 🤣

A family arrived the next day to take said shabby pieces for free and were made up!!

I’ve stopped bothering selling anything after years of this! Everything goes on the front lawn with a “take me” sign.

BruceAndNosh · 27/06/2024 10:23

I unfortunately live at the end of a cul de sac so no passing traffic to pick free stuff

I now treat Marketplace as sport for when I’m in a particularly bad PMDD frame of mind. People on there are AWFUL.

Any time I sell any baby thing I get the same old manipulative claptrap about their ‘friend’ who is fleeing something and has no money and could they have it for free? (So they can resell). I enjoy fucking with them for ages, seeing how much they think they can get away with and then telling them to basically fuck off. It’s much fun. I can be astonishingly petty if the mood takes me.

We had one of them, they were setting up a house for a lady fleeing DV.

They actually made a post about it, got loads of stuff and then promptly tried to sell it on marketplace.

obviously not the brightest but it did provide some entertainment.

I tried to give away a sofa once, the amount of people who wanted me to deliver was astounding. I agreed to one person as they just needed me to help them move it down the street but they never pitched up.

I gave away all my baby gates (the ones you screw into the wall) and mentioned that one of the screws was missing but it could easily be replaced.

She contacted me later on asking when I was going to bring the replacement screw as she needed to fit it…

MoonStarsAndRainbows · 27/06/2024 10:31

Agree so many time wasters on there, but with eBay’s greedy 12.8% fees and zero seller protection, I’ve saved a so much more money / hassle by selling old baby stuff on there. You just have to persevere.

I did have one woman go batshit on me because she wanted something I was giving away free. It had already gone, and I kept getting messages off her, done with just rows of exclamation marks and question marks. Crazy person. Blocked her.

I listed a book full stop a woman contacted me and said is this in hardback? I replied no it never came out in hardback, it was only ever in paperback. Oh okay then she said I'll leave it. I can't understand why she only wants a book if it's a hardback. Either you want to read the book or you don't, or did you need it for propping up a table?

Because the print in hardback is larger. As I've got older I can't read the print in paperback as it makes my eyes ache even with glasses.

Have been driven mad this week both by trying to sell things on FB for low prices and give things away.

Giving away some readily available kitchen items worth about £3 and the person decided to drive from 15 miles away… surely it’ll be more than that in petrol… then when they realise that decide it’s too far 🤪

CutthroatDruTheViolent · 27/06/2024 15:03

It's either one or the other.

Timewasters that send endless questions that are answered in the advert, keep finding excuses to not pick up....and then ghost you.

Or one person that agrees immediately to your selling price and collects within the hour. Thank god for these people!

Badburyrings · 27/06/2024 19:24

I am forever surprised how stupid people are. I was giving away two pairs of riding jodphurs, both brand new, never worn and probably worth about £50 each but they had been in my wardrobe a good 9 years or so and I was never going to fit in them. I posted on our local equestrian site that covers the whole of Dorset. First person to respond said "I don't think they will fit me so you will have to take them to the charity shop instead"

Dumbfounded..

Alwaystired2023 · 27/06/2024 19:27

Love giving things away on Facebook marketplace, but I am just so much stricter/more blunt now. This is the item, if you want it collect it here at this time and that is all. Can't get into lots of conversations it could take a whole lifetime to give away a pair of socks otherwise

TheThingIsYeah · 27/06/2024 20:01

@Badburyrings

I am forever surprised how stupid people are.

As I remarked on another thread once, just think for a moment how stupid the average person is. Then consider that half the population is even more stupid than that.
